Most of the players I'm actually interested in lost on the day I couldn't watch. FEH.

Strange! Heliovaara had retired in singles, but won in doubles today. However, I'm glad he is OK so soon

Default Re: Week 9: Singapore (Entry List)

Random thoughts from yesterday:

Before the Rieschick-Sugita match, I overheard this kid basically acting surprised that Rieschick was a pro tennis player and didn't expect much from him because of his size. Then Rieschick proceeds to win in straight sets. Sugita has a good serve, but Rieschick was like a wall, returning very well. Rieschick's serve wasn't all that great (save for a few powerful ones here and there), and his second serve was pretty meh, but Sugita never really attacked it. In fact, maybe if Sugita tried being a more aggressive/attacking player (like he was in some games), then he might have had a chance.

Oh, and Rieschick is like a big teddy bear. Hehe. He seems really nice off the court, as I saw him joking around a bit with some of the other players after the match. He was also really nice when I asked for an autograph and photo. Very intense out on the court, though. Lots of yelling.

Bhambri vs. Rungkat looked like an intense match. I could see that the first set was quite intense, some really nice ground strokes from both players. Then the match started running longer and longer (two matches on centre court finished, and they still weren't done yet) and both players started getting tired and hurting. It became more of an endurance match by the third set, and both called for an MTO. It goes into tiebreak, and both had a lot of heart, but in the end, Rungkat made more errors than Bhambri. I imagine Lu is gonna sweep him aside tomorrow.

Didn't get to see Lu vs. Huang but I hear loud cheering when Huang finally got on the board.

That top half of the draw is ripe for Lu's taking... very weak now, I think.

I got to get autographs and take photos with Rieschick, Capkovic (who's very, very tall, but was in a good mood after he and Weintraub won their doubles match), and Laaksonen (who was there for some training; I must have caught him after training as he was very quiet). I saw a bunch of other players as well but didn't get the chance to approach them.

More second round matches today.

a summary or Chvojka's match and/or a picture would be awesome if that match is in your plans for today

don't feel like you have to go out of your way to get it though

Hahaha, I was hoping to get one last night (a photo) after his doubles match, but alas, that was not meant to be. :-(

Default Re: Week 9: Singapore (Entry List)

Random thoughts from today...

Despite the scoreline, Soeda v Laaksonen was a pretty good, close match. Soeda just happened to get his shots in when it mattered most. Both players were switching it up, moving around the court (and moving the other person around the court). Laaksonen was having a bit of trouble with his backhand, though, so that really hurt him. Still, a lot of heart from Laaksonen. Also random: Laaksonen's shorts ride up his legs as the match progresses. Kinda... fascinating. (No, he doesn't seem bothered enough to pull them down.)

Capkovic v Chvojka was also pretty close, though that's more obvious from the scoreline in the first set than the second. Even with the bagel, the second set was pretty close. Lots of games went into deuce multiple times. It wasn't really a great match to watch, though. Basically a baseline dogfight. Not that that's a bad thing, but neither player seemed to have GREAT groundstrokes anyway, so it wasn't all that fun to watch. Chvojka tried switching it up in the second set, and hit some pretty amazing shots, but consistency just wasn't there. Capkovic was just more solid at the clutch.

Weintraub v Statham was interesting. It was actually pretty close for about a set and a half. Weintraub was great at the baseline, and Statham made him pay for it with some well-timed drop shots. I think Statham got about 3 or 4 points off Weintraub (at least) with his drop shots. Statham's actually pretty good when he approaches the net and makes Weintraub run to the net then back. At some point, though, Weintraub was more solid with his baseline shots, and Statham ran out of steam sometime in the middle of the second set. Shame, but that was a pretty good match to watch.

Udomchoke v Ehara was a blowout. Wasn't interested in watching when I saw the first set scoreline.

Lu really should grab the finals spot on the top half of his draw. The bottom half is a bit more interesting. I don't see Capkovic beating Soeda, but the winner of Weintraub-Udomchoke could make the finals.

Alas, will be missing the quarters and semis.
