Default 2007 ... rash of Round Robin tourneys?

I'm doing research on past draws, and ran across a bunch of weird ones. In 2007 (the only time this has happened) there are 5 tourneys that are listed in the ATP site as being round robin. (Adelaide, Vina del Mar, Delray Beach, Buenos Aires, and Las Vegas.) Click on the draw and it goes into a different format that I don't understand. Weird thing is, Tennis Navigator won't let me look at the HTML format at all, (I just get an error message) and the PDF formats are just jibberish. Were these tourneys REALLY round robins?

Yes, they were RRs. A silly experiment that was rightfully abandoned.

No they don't. Tour finals has an eight-man draw. The lower the number of competitors, the better the case for RRs. The five events in question had more normal draw sizes.

Yes they do, it's a RR, it used to not be a RR.

^quite the contrary mate, it was an exception when it wasn't a RR (it happened only 4 times). And originally it was one big RR group without any final match.

Haha, I always forget that this happened. It was so stupid and I remember MTF was throwing tantrums about it the whole time. IIRC it was stopped after there was some mess at the Las Vegas tournament about who was supposed to go through to the quarterfinals and the ATP couldn't figure out its own rules.

Thanks all for your answers/discussion. I think I can pull the info I need off the ATP site. But instead of one tourney taking 2 minutes, I might be at it a while. Thank goodness there are only 5.

Have you tried Wiki searching? Here is Las Vegas:

Yes, sure.

And I want to add something, at least in Viña that stupid system made the 2007 tournament the worst in his history, by far. The 8th seeded was Vasallo-Arguello, 85 at that moment.

Don't know why Gonzo managed to lose in quarters, although he was tired for his run in Australia and the DC

Does anybody remember why Korolev was declared winner of RR1 in that tourney? Adding up the games he ends up with 17:18 while Blake has 15:14, which I would consider better. Or was Blake punished because Delpo gave up against him?

The ATP decided that Head-to-head would be the main tiebreaker, and since Korolev beat Blake, he should go through.

Percentage of games won would have been the tiebreaker had it been a true 3-way tie including Del Potro, but they determined that since Del Potro effectively retired from the event, he would no longer be eligible, therefore making it only a head-to-head with Blake & Korolev.

If Del Potro had finished the match, Blake would've advanced based on having the highest percentage of games won, but they decided that since it was a retirement the match didn't count.

Here are more details:

http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/ten...ory?id=2785752

Quote:
The relevant rule states that an incomplete match shall not count as a match played for the retiring player. This eliminated del Potro based on the tiebreak procedure for greatest number of completed matches and left only Blake and Korolev tied with 1-1 records. Therefore, under ATP rules Korolev should have advanced having beaten Blake in their round robin encounter.

Tour finals works because there are so few players

a larger draw in a Round Robin format (even very slightly larger) is a nightmare to organize and make sense of
