Doha R1: Monfils def Machado 7-5, 6-3
Nice showdown by Rui! Great and encouraging perfomance on hard! He is becoming day by day a more complete player! http://imgsrv2.tennisuniverse.com/mt.../notworthy.gif
Could win one round in AO with a good draw!
Congrats to Gael for the win.

Monfils becoming quite the volleyer. He could always pull some good volleys (along with terrible duds), but he's actually becoming consistent with it now. Day after day it's becoming even harder to understand why Monfils isn't at least in the top 10.

 Monfils.
The man never ceases to entertain, although he is a coach's worst nightmare. Served at *5/4 40/00 in the first set, and had a comfortable forehand drive put-away at 40/30...chose the WRONG place to direct it, and Machado was already running to deflect it for a nice winner.
Machado fought well, but Gael was simply several classes above. Should have won for the loss of 5-6 games, and looked good if you can forget the several lapses.

Speaking of coach (or nightmare :P), is Leconte still working with him?

Did you watch the game at least?
And also, I wonder how many people would guess that Rui would win 8 games to Monfils on Hard surface...

Injuries ... Simply. He missed 4 Masters 1000 again last year.
@Shirogane: Leconte didn't work with him and he won't do it. Monfils'coach, Patrick Chamagne, said he may not work with anyone (no Mauresmo, Noah or anyone else).
By the way, good victory for Gaël. He still has to improve on volley, i saw him better, but he served very well and can do semi this week and play a good match against Rafa.

Made Monfils sweat and run about quite a bit there. Interesting game has Machado. Good effort from the man.

I never saw Machado before and I like his game, good for Monfils to battle through this one though
