Nalbandian denies Dent for Madrid semis spot

World Sports - AFP

MADRID (AFP) - Argentina's David Nalbandian set up a semi-final battle against heavy serving Croatian Ivan Ljubicic after overwhelming American Taylor Dent 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 Friday at the 2.425-million-euro Madrid Masters.

In contrast to the 27 aces Ljubicic rained down in his earlier upset of seventh seed Joachim Johansson, the game of Nalbandian, the fourth seed, was decidedly more gentle.

Nalbandian managed four against Dent, supplemented by 35 winners and two breaks of serve. The Argentine was competing in his third quarter-final in his last four tournaments dating to the US Open.

Crowd-pleasing heavyweights Andre Agassi and Marat Safin were due for night-time quarter-final matches at the Rockodromo.

Agassi, the second seed, will have it all to play for as the 2002 winner aims to eliminate the last Spaniard standing in Tommy Roberdo, seeded eighth.

S afin, the number three seed, faces underdog Luis Horna of Peru, who is trying to defeat a seed for the third consecutive round after dispatching holder Juan Carlos Ferrero and Andrei Pavel.

Ljubicic, 29th in the world, has Masters Series semi-final experience to call upon from Hamburg last spring.

The 25-year-old who spent part of his childhood in a Bosnian war zone has little to fear, he said, because he feels he can produce a challenge to every opponent.

"I've played semis in Hamburg, that was a much bigger surprise than this. Everybody knows that I can play well on indoor courts. I beat (Rainer) Schuettler and (Tim) Henman back to back and now Joachim.

"I don't see why I cannot go all the way. I feel like I have a game for everybody."

The Johansson-Ljubicic, battle, which lasted a gruelling two hours, 41 minutes, was completed without a single break of serve.

There were only three break points in the serving slugfest.

Ljubicic never gave up the fight as he put the first blemishes on the record of the 11th-ranked Johansson, who came in without the loss of a set.

The Croatian struck 52 winners and notched a final ace to yield three match points. A fourth double of the afternoon off the Johansson racket spelled the

end.

Johansson's output in the duel was slightly better, with 56 winners and 15 unforced errors.

He still stands level with Andy Roddick for the most indoor wins this season, 13, and remains in outside contention for a place in the eight-man season final next month.

Nalbandian Sets Up Semifinal with Ljubicic

10 minutes ago Sports - Reuters

MADRID (Reuters) - Fourth-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian defeated American Taylor Dent (news) 7-6, 6-3 on Friday to advance to the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters.

Nalbandian will meet Croatian Ivan Ljubicic (news), who beat seventh-seeded Swede Joachim Johansson (news) 7-6, 6-7, 7-6.

Dent broke Nalbandian in the sixth game of the first set but was broken himself while serving for the set at 5-3.

The American then went 4-1 up in the tiebreak before Nalbandian won six points in a row to take the set.

There were no breaks in the earlier semi-final in a match lasting nearly three hours with Ljubicic moving ahead in the deciding tiebreak before Johansson handed him victory with a double fault.

The Croatian finally edged ahead in the deciding tiebreak before Johansson handed him victory with a double fault.

"At the end, I served two big serves and he finished with a double fault, which was maybe the trademark of our game, that everything was decided by serves," Ljubicic said.

The unseeded Ljubicic said he was ready to take on Nalbandian after knocking out top seed Tim Henman in the last round and thought he had a chance of claiming the title.

"I do feel more and more comfortable on the court every match I play," the Croatian said. "If I beat Henman back to back with Joachim, I don't see why I cannot go all the way. I feel like I have a game for almost anybody."

DN: No, no; ningún problema.
