Yes, he looked good and hit some great forehand winners. He only lost 11 points on his own serve and 3 of those were double faults. In his interview he said he felt good, and thought that he played better and better as the match went on. He said he was happy with his game and thought he played a solid match.

Tough match for Gael against one of his closest friends on tour, who was struggling with injury. I don't think it was easy for Gael to focus or be really ruthless out there tonight. He showed great form against Giraldo though, so hopefully he will play much better against Daniel Brands tomorrow. Allez Gael!

Tough match between two of my favorites. I wish Richie wasn't injured, but at least Gaël made it as painless as possible.

Gael was fantastic - he destroyed Brands in 49 minutes.

He served brilliantly, returned incredibly well, and never gave Brands a chance to get into the match. He was super-focussed, and it's great to see him fit and healthy, and playing so well. Allez against Flo!

Wow, allez La Monf! Can't wait to watch the replay.

It's funny how most tennis fans have completely written off Gael Monfils, but if he stays healthy (knock on wood), I think he's going to shock them.

What a joy to watch Gael fully fit and playing like this. He was so aggressive and focussed, destroying Mayer in just 55 minutes. 30 winners tonight (23 UE) and in his interview he sounds really up for the final tomorrow. Would be great to see him play like this against Nadal... Gael's beaten him twice here before. Allez!!!

Gael lost to Rafa 6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2

Real shame – I hoped Gael had a chance, given his amazing form this week. But he started slow and Rafa started well, and the 1st set was gone. Gael served much better in the 2nd and was 3-0 up, but then Rafa came back at him. It was very entertaining, with both playing well, and Gael won a tight tie break. The 3rd set seemed a bit flat at times. Gael made errors to give the break - too many UE's overall today. He had BP's to break back but Rafa played well and then Gael got very unlucky on a ball of Rafa's that was miles out but wasn't called. Gael took a half hearted swing at it – expecting a late call or an overrule I think – his shot went over the net and Rafa put it away. The umpire judged Gael had played on and wouldn't let him challenge the call. It would have given Gael another break point (the replay showed the ball was clearly out) but unfortunately, that's the rule and Rafa went on to hold serve.

Gael's form today wasn't as good as his QF or semi, but he gave Nadal some problems and should be back inside the top 30 next week, which is a great start to the year. Hopefully, 2014 will just get better and better for him.

I don't have too much regrets for this fact of match. I think Gaël wasn't in a great shape. He wasn't like 2012 or 2009 when he beat Rafa. I would hope but finally he managed to take one set and i think for yesterday, it was pretty good. Of course i would have prefered he could play his game, as he did this week but... It was an interesting week and i approve his decision to not going to Auckland. He has to stay healthy and may perform in better tournaments!
