i thought fighting was the best about hockey we even had a player in nhl (i'm polish for those who don't know, just sometimes living in russia), named krzysztof oliwa, he specialized in making fights
it's been a hot topic lately because studies have shown that nhl fighters often end up having brain complications later in life. 3 current(well not current anymore but they were current at the time) nhl fighters committed suicide this past offseason too. Plus like Snowwy said the league's best player, rookie of the year last year, and this years current goal leafs and points leaders are all out with concussions currently(4 different very important players all at the same time). They weren't a result of fights, but getting punched in the head repeatadly can never be good when it comes to concussions.
It's a hot topic for the NHL atm, but I don't suspect that fighting will be banned for at least 5 years though I do see it happening sometime down the road, just not sure when.
Personally, I hoep it stays, the players who partake in a fight, know the risks beforehand, and accept them. This is vastly different from getting a concussion after being blindside hit with an elbow. You don't have an option there.

I would like fighting be gone from NHL but I also don't believe this will help with the concussion problem in the league. The only way, IMO, is to have severe punishment for cheap shots plus not only the player but the team and coach be liable for cheap shots.
imo concussions will always be a problem in the NHL. The game is so fast, even if you do dish out very severe punishments it won't make it stop completely, a lot of these incidents are accidents, the players hitting have the right intent, but something goes wrong, i.e. they get their elbows too high up, the player they hit goes into the boards akwardly, or the accidently clip the head. The only way to significantly reduce the concussions is to vastly decrease the hitting in the game which would be a horrible thing. Concussions suck, but they will be a part of the game unfortunately I think
