Re: Off Topic Chat Thread
Newfoundland isn't out of it just yet.
If they win all 3 of their remaining games, and Saskatchewan wins tonight, and Ontario wins tomorrow morning, and Manitoba, and Yukon/NW Territories, and PEI win tomorrow afternoon, and Canada, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and BC wins tomorrow night there will be a 6 or 7 or 8 way tie for 4th at 5-6
It's all I can hope for atm, they're not done yet, but 12 results need to go their way to keep them in it

Re: Off Topic Chat Thread
Congrats on your cross country success! Devon Kershaw finishing second is huge! Hell.. the entire team has had some great results this year: Kershaw, Harvey and Valjas. Next season should be even better!
Too bad the sport is so tiny in Canada It really is a great result! But nobody seems to care.. I hope this season's results will give the sport a boost in your country though!

Re: Off Topic Chat Thread
I wouldnt really count on it. The sport doesnt have a huge following in canada and i dont think this will change that
its kind of funyy how, apart from speed skating, curling, hockey and ski cross that canada cant ever seem to have both sexes doing well at the same time.

I know, but it needs to start somewhere.. and Canada actually getting some nice results is a good start. Although it would be nice if CBC could actually show the races too.. I know the time difference is an issue, but I think fans would like to watch it, even if it was early. Most races are in the weekends anyway.. it shouldn't be a problem at all.
I find it pitiful that the guys are doing better than ever, they have been on the podium a number of times this season, yet people don't care. It really is a shame. This is a HUGE accomplishment.. Canada coming from nowhere to people actually talking about them as some of the toughest to beat. They had an amazing season, and finishing second overall is just FANTASTIC! I don't think anyone would have even imagined that before the season started. Canada is just as good as Norway, Sweden and Switzerland these days.. I'd actually put those countries as the four best ones.
BTW.. people here LOVE the Canadians! They are very popular in Norway. They have such a great spirit (very Canadian), and people think it's great that the country is finally doing great in such a kick-ass sport! Most people think it's awesome that the sport isn't contained to just Norway and Sweden anymore, but to countries like Switzerland and Canada too.. and imo you guys deserve a race on Canadian soil. It could help boost the sport even more.

I agree with you but you know how things work. Its going to take these men getting consistent results on the tour for more than just one year and winning these event for more than just one year for the sport to pick up.Even then it might not be enough
Yes these men deserve recognition but for some reason some sports just never really take off in a country and the few that do well at it are left to celebrate on their own.Its always good when new countries do well and challenge the traditional powers. In this case norway, switzerland, sweden and germany.

Of course, but the younger generation has a lot of potential too! Valjas is only 23 years old, and he reached the podium this year, and Alex Harvey has of course reached the podium a multiple of times this season. He is very good! The future is looking bright for Canadian cross country skiing. I just wish it would get the attention it deserves. Canada started to do well last season, and did even better this season. They have proved that last season was not just a blip, or a fluke, they have proved that they are up there with the best of the best, and that they are in form, and are consistent. I think that's a start, of course they need to keep going over more seasons, but I think they will. This was just the beginning. Canada will establish itself in the top, trust me. The younger generation shows a lot of promise too!
But you're right.. something needs to be done to boost the popularity of the sport in Canada. You can never be sure, maybe you're right... maybe it it'll always be a fringe sport, and maybe the athletes will never get the recognition they deserve, and that would be a shame. However, I think it's too soon to just give up. The fact is that Canada hasn't done well in the sport for 30 years, and that might explain why it's not so popular. If you couple that with basically no coverage of the races, of course people were not interested. But now we can see results, and I think the sport can become more popular with more coverage of the races, and people would probably want to watch it too. I also think Canada deserves to have a race on home soil. It's about time. I don't want the sport to be contained only to Europe, that is boring.

Re: Off Topic Chat Thread
if it ever will catch on it needs more coverage. If it ever does it will take more than 1 or 2 years it will take more like 5 or 6 maybe more
but i think that in canada as with every country there are certain sports that will ALWAYS gets more attention and funding and so it will be therefor easier for youth to grow up in and compete in certain sports. Thats the problem, why will youth choose a sport that might not be funded as well instead of picking something like hockey or diving , which canada makes a little easier to participate in.

Say what you want about Jennifer Jones, at least she wins sometimes, whereas these other ladies never find a way to pull through.

she's been to the world championships 4 times and won once and not gotten anything twice
the one year she did win was when her biggest world tormentor anette norberg of sweden, who she's never beaten at a world championship wasnt there. she needed a major melt down from the japanese skip to get past the semi final and defeated a nervous and inexperienced chinese skip in the final.
even her fans will admit that her world championships win, while deserved has some asterisks around it.

Norway had such an awful, pathetic and embarrassing start to the championships. And we're supposed to be among the favorites ffs! It's just a huge
