Default Re: 2012 FITD Management Thread

Hey everyone, there's a situation that has developed with regards to how I made one of my picks in this year's Australian Open FITD that I'd like the Board to make a decision on:
  • For the R1 match between Andreas Beck and Eric Prodon, I wrote "A.Beck". Although I can now see it was unnecessary, I did this to avoid any potential confusion with Karol Beck, who was also in the draw.
  • My pick was not accepted, because I wrote "A.Beck" instead of just "Beck", as shown in the main draw posted at the start of the FITD thread (which we were told to copy from).
  • Consequently, I was not awarded 45 points for picking Andreas Beck correctly (as he did win that match).
  • Currently I am in 4th place, exactly 45 points behind 2nd and 3rd place (who are tied and separated by TB) - it turns out that I would be tied for 2nd place if that pick had been counted.
  • Depending on the result of the final (i.e. if Djokovic def. Nadal), I could finish 4th instead of tied for 2nd, meaning that simply writing "A.Beck" instead of "Beck" could have potentially cost me 480 FITD ranking points! And if Nadal def. Djokovic, I would finish 6th instead of tied for 3rd, which would cost me 420 FITD ranking points. Either way, that pick not being counted has had a major effect on my ranking points.
Given these circumstances, particularly with the potential impact on the final standings and ranking points, do you guys think it would be fairer if my Andreas Beck pick was counted as a correct pick?

Im not on the board or anything. But your pick really should be counted if there is 2 Becks.

It didn't matter that there are two Becks. You should have written just Beck. It's a hard job for manager to correct all the mistakes, especially in a GS tournament. Personally, in your situation, I would give you that 45 points, because it makes a difference. But i guess it's the manager's decision. I don't think that the FITD rules are clear about something like this.

Yeah, at the time I didn't even realise it would be a problem for the manager if I wrote A.Beck. I think it was a natural reaction to the fact that there were two Becks, I just thought 'maybe it would be better if I specify which Beck this is', even though they weren't playing each other. I guess I was trying to be more clear with my pick when it wasn't necessary.

The issue at hand is how significant those 45 points actually became in terms of the final standings. It's unfortunate that this happened in a grand slam, near the top of the leaderboard with a lot of ranking points at stake.

I would award those points...

When I managed Montreal last year I had zillions of mistakes but corrected them...

It's always the same confusions with A.Beck or K.Beck as well as Bogomolov Jr. and Bogomolov... Just close an eye in those situations, managers...

If there are mistakes like Kolhshreiber it's not excusable but the case as shown above should not make a player receive point penalties!

I agree, managing FITD needs to have a little leeway. Obviously the pick is clear and was not meant to be difficult for the manager. If someone asks me to correct a minor mistake, it takes little time to fix the problem up. Removing 2 characters from 1 pick is not an issue. (If it was for all the picks, then I wouldn't accept the draw.) We need to be really careful not to alienate players from playing the game, this is especially true for new players, guidance for new players is sometimes necessary.

In my opinion, this pick should be counted. The pick was clear and a simple PM to a player to ask them to be careful about the occasional mistake is better than creating a drama about it. This was brought up in the managers thread in 2010, and penalising players for honesst mistakes was seen as unfair then, and I still think it is unfair now.

I understand having to correct many picks is a big problem for FITD, but as a manager, we have to accept that there are going to be some mistakes, regardless of how well we post the draws or how many times we ask people to follow the instructions. Major deviations from the instructions is unacceptable. But for the good of the game, we can accommodate minor issues. (If we can't do it straight away, no worries, just say so and fix it at a later date).

I was doing up Zagreb today and someone wrote A.Beck. For me it is not a huge issue as this is something I caught right away. This honestly would be very easy to catch as it would stand out when checking for the error. Spelling errors are harder to catch.

I would also agree that if the person sends the first initial for everyone or has all spelling errors then you should accept but one small error and the manager should still accept. Just my opinion and obviously it is up to which ever manager runs the tournament.

Hi everyone !

If you want, I can take San Jose.

I never managed here but I have done a few on the women's forum, so I'm not a total newbie.

Let me know if you accept me as a new manager.

B.

Boomer, check post #16. I would be extremely grateful if you were able to manage San Jose. Since it would be the first tournament in that series (kinda like the one at the end of last season I ran), you don't have to worry about any circuit leaderboard or stuff...
let me know if you'd be willing to do it for me

Ok, let's do that, I'm happy to help you with the U.S. spring streak. I like the idea of a series like that (even if I didn't do well as a player last season) lol.
