Connors would have been a beast with modern racquets. That is my opinion from the footage I have seen of him.

This comparison is the same as saying "Reading vs Technology", it's apples and oranges.

I think you're confusing playing style with technique. Pretty much all tennis players are taught the same technique when starting out. Some, like Federer, are talented enough to do everything well. Others play to their strengths and tailor their games to suit their physical limitations, personal preference, surface specialisations, to be different… etc. What sets Federer apart from the Nadal, Novak, Murray and the rest is that he does a lot of things well. Hitting from the baseline in an offensive/defensive manner requires no less technique than hitting a volley or lob or serve or drop shot, if there was no technique the balls would fly all over the place or you'd miss altogether or it would be a badminton shot screaming for a smash.

why did Setsampras make such an obvious double account? is this allowed???

and of course it's probably a combination of both. any skill, even if techonology does not improve, tactics do. players today are in better shape, have better nutrition habits, and know more than ever about how to hit angles and how to end rallies and improve the serve and so on and so forth.

but there is no denying the racquets today and furthermore, the strings today, make it much easier to hit 'big' and go for it than in the past. not to mention the insane spin that is now possible for the likes of tennis players (the guy on my sig in particular)

Alright so a lot of people have weighed in on the specifics of the argument, but no one is really taking a strong stance here. All in all are players better now they were before? Assuming a 1960,70,80s player and a 2000s player have the same racquet, does one have a distinct advantage over the other?
