C’est fou, l’impact d’un match dans l’affirmation d’une personnalité. Depuis ce déclic, Benneteau aligne la brochette de scalps la plus prestigieuse du tennis français : Baghdatis à Toronto (alors dixième), Gonzalez (huitième) à Bercy et Blake (sixième) à Indian Wells. Le tout en Masters Series.
Pas le plus brillant, mais peut-être le meilleur tacticien du contingent national, Benneteau a dû se mettre en tête qu’il n’était plus un outsider pour que le second couteau sans fulgurance particulière entre dans la catégorie « mecs à éviter ». « J’aime chez lui sa capacité à aller au combat, raconte Olivier Malcor, l’un de ses coaches. Parfois, il s’échappe un peu du truc. Mais il a réellement pris confiance et il se sent vraiment à sa place au niveau où il est. Comme il a besoin de se lancer des défis, il adore jouer les gros tournois. Quel que soit l’adversaire, il est serein. » Pas vraiment irrésistible depuis le début de la saison, Benneteau avait pourtant réussi à contrer lundi le plus radical des cogneurs du circuit, le rouleau-compresseur Blake qui vous prend à la gorge dès le premier point. Bien en jambes, il riposta au défi jusqu’à faire parfois passer l’Américain pour une midinette.
Candidat à la Coupe Davis
Grâce à la montée d’adrénaline propre aux grands rendez-vous et aux effets d’une bonne préparation, le Français avait su se hisser au niveau de l’événement. « On fait un vrai investissement, sur la préparation physique notamment, et on fait bien bosser les gars. Julien, par exemple, n’était pas bien à Las Vegas. Mais comme Nicolas Perrotte (le préparateur) est là depuis deux semaines, il a pu le remettre dans le coup », expliquait Malcor. « C’est une question de suivi, de petites choses à faire tous les jours pour s’entretenir, complétait Benneteau. En début de saison, j’avais eu du mal à faire la part des choses dans le discours qu’on m’avait tenu. On me disait qu’on n’allait rien changer dans mon jeu, tout en modifiant certaines choses dans la préparation. Ce n’est pas que j’étais réfractaire, mais j’ai eu du mal à trouver le bon ajustement. Depuis, j’ai compris le message… »
Face à Blake, le Français, impayable retourneur et habile pilonneur du revers adverse, profita d’abord des énormes largesses de l’Américain qui confessa plus tard « le jour sans », impardonnable « face à la densité du circuit symbolisée par des joueurs comme Benneteau, Simon ou Mahut ». Et, légèrement rattrapé par ses émotions dans le second set, le Français sut retrouver le fil pour enlever un tie-break mené au pas de charge (7-1). « J’aime battre les grands noms du tennis, jubilait-il. Sur ce match, je suis content de mon attitude et de mon jeu. Du fond, je suis difficile à déborder… »
Dans le grand flou de la hiérarchie nationale, un tel coup d’éclat pose brutalement Benneteau en candidat crédible pour le match de Coupe Davis en Russie au début du mois d’avril. Pour aborder l’événement, le joueur parle avec malice et gourmandise de la « terre battue intérieure » retenue pour la rencontre. « J’espère marquer des points. Après l’Australie, j’avais eu l’impression de payer pour une défaite au premier tour et ça m’était apparu injuste. Tout comme le fait d’être mis en balance avec Gaël (Monfils) pour le rôle d’éventuel remplaçant alors que, pour moi, il n’y a pas photo sur les derniers mois.
