So many nonbelivers in one single page....

Thank god someone was insane enought to do his homework on tennis history to know tennis is not constant, but changes all the time:¨

How about Sampras going 2 years without winning a single title and looking like a corpse out there when beeing destroyed by the Hewitts and lesser known players at that time, just to win Usopen 2002?

Sorry if my sarcasm detector might have been down, all I remember was a strange discussion we had about sillyness.

It was an homage to Alex999 posting style. He was in a phase when most of his posts sounded like that and included the word silly.

Never thought it possible by the end of USO 2011. Truth.
He said "I can get back to number #1" at the beginning of the year and I thought in your dream. Shame on me.
He pulled Woziacki since September 2011 (playing more tournaments) and now .......... GOATness more and more confirmed.

He wasn't good in Rome either - just had a good draw to the semis - titans like Berlocq, nearly retired JCF and Seppi was a great Masters draw. Looking at his level of play he has not been anywhere close to slam winning form - the biggest worry has been his serve. Is he suddenly going to recover and have enough to beat the likes of Nadal/Djoko/Berdych/Tsonga/Del Po/Murray on grass? The only way I see him winning is by again having a LOT of luck with the draw - with the serve & FH as they were in the semi vs Novak I can't see him beating even Berdych/Tsonga/Del Po, let alone fellow top 4 players.
Frankly no way is he anywhere close to Nadal & Djoko's level right now - they've got to the last 4 slam finals, Nadal the last 5. So if by some miracle he did get to no.1 in the next month it would be quite laughable - no players would actually think he's the best player in the world no matter what the ranking said.

Re: Will Federer regain the #1 spot and break Sampras's record for most weeks at the
Feds truly needed All the Stars in Heavens to align - Nadal bolting out early, himself beating Djokovic and grabbing the title, in this case involving a very good Murray - and somehow it indeed happened.
All of this while he looked rather dire in the earlier stages of the tournament, being bogged down by back spasms in both the match against Benneteau ( ) as well as in the match against Malisse ( ), who, in all honesty, should have boinked him out of the tournament. Not that far off from a 0.00001% chance I'd say.
Can't see what's so wrong with the massive number of posters who claimed it was unlikely to happen - including me.
But bloody hell it feels so nice to be so VERY WRONG about this this time!

Re: Will Federer regain the #1 spot and break Sampras's record for most weeks at the
He played really well at quarter, semi and final. Almost vintage Fed. Serve not great at final but bh, net points and overheads cohesive. He's been pretty calm this whole year; making less easy mistakes/shanks. He improved a lot after started working with Paul Annacone!
Fed has the most beautiful but still very powerful game of tennis.

yeah... if one ever just simply look at the history of world no 1s...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ingles_players
it's far more common for the top players to constantly get back into #1 and trade places with other greats at that time... than to not get back at #1 at all... and considering federer just needs to get back to #1 to match and break the record... statistically it is more likely to get back to #1 than now...

wacky

It would be funny if Novak played and won Newport just to stop Fed beating the Sampras record.

I doubt Novak would even win Newport, those are very fast grasscourts and Djokovic would face a bunch of those old guard grasscourt specialists and big servers.
He has only won 1 grasscourt tournament for a reason, you know...
