He wasn't good in Rome either - just had a good draw to the semis - titans like Berlocq, nearly retired JCF and Seppi was a great Masters draw. Looking at his level of play he has not been anywhere close to slam winning form - the biggest worry has been his serve. Is he suddenly going to recover and have enough to beat the likes of Nadal/Djoko/Berdych/Tsonga/Del Po/Murray on grass? The only way I see him winning is by again having a LOT of luck with the draw - with the serve & FH as they were in the semi vs Novak I can't see him beating even Berdych/Tsonga/Del Po, let alone fellow top 4 players.
He was playing terribly at the beginning of 2011, yet rediscovered his form to make the FO final. Then he played poorly over the summer period, but was back to playing well at the USO. After that period he played at a high level until Miami this year, where he burned out. Then he played well to win Madrid...

Form comes and goes.

You are correct. This is probably his first best chance to attempt to do it.

With 2011 Wimbledon points dropped
1 Djokovic, Novak (SRB) 10,280
2 Federer, Roger (SUI) 9,075
3 Nadal, Rafael (ESP) 8,860

Points for Wimbledon 2012
.....................................R128(10)....R 64(45).....R32(90)....R16(180)....QF(360)...SF(720 )...Final(1200).....Win(2000)

Roger Federer must win and hope Novak Djokovic does not go past the semifinal to be #1 post Wimbledon by 75 points.

Best chance for Fed is if he is in Djokovic's half. He will be No. 1 if he wins the tournament in that case.

Another thing that would be interesting is if Federer beats Djokovic in the semis and then loses to Nadal in the final.

Depending on results between WIM and the USO, that could actually see Nadal and Federer go into that tournament as the top 2 seeds. If Nadal and Djokovic ended up on the same side of the draw, Federer suddenly has a big shot at the USO title.

As if the organisers would allow that to happen. 3 out of 18 (since 2008), remember? In fact, 0 out of 4 at the USO!

Wasn't the theory that this was a fix to favour Federer?

At this point, putting Djokovic and Nadal on the same side of the draw at the USO would help Fed. Djokovic would probably be favoured to win the SF, and Fed has a better chance of beating Djokovic than Nadal in the final.

So you'd think that if the draws were being fixed to help Federer, then the chances of a Djok-Nadal semi were increased.

Nah. For most of those slams Fed was seeded either 1 or 2, and the same for Nadal, so it wasn't a question of avoiding the spaniard. If it favoured anybody, it was Nadal, because instead of drawing Djokovic he repeatedly got Murray...

Basically, Djokovic was adversely affected because he always had to struggle with Federer, Murray was adversely affected because he always got Nadal, and Federer was adversely affected because he always got Djokovic instead of Murray. Nadal, on the other hand, breezed past Murray into the final almost every time.

With the Wimbledon draw out, and Mr. Djokovic and Mr. Federer in the same half (again), the situation is even more clear.

If Federer wins Wimbledon, he will regain #1 and break the Sampras record.

He'll need to return to pre-Rome form to have a good chance.

A better chance of avoiding Djokovic in semi would be for Djoko and Fed go be #1 and #2. That is not out of the question even if Wimbledon turns out disappointing with another loss to Djoker. Fed can pick up lots of points in Rogers Cup and Cincinnatti, and his chances in the Olympics should be excellent - in the "best of three"-format, he is current world No. 1.

i'm on board with this if he wins wimby beating nole and rafa along the way. don't think anyone would argue it's not deserved in that case.

is it likely? nope. but we're not talking about just any tennis player here.

I have a strong feeling you are wrong, I know several who would be expected to so argue. Someone is bound to bring up the fact that he has less slam finals in the past year than Nadal and slam victories than Djokovic. Someone else will again call for a 24 month ranking (in which case Fed would already have overtaken Sampras, but that is another discussion). And someone will blame knees or any other convenient limb for the Wimbledon defeat.
