I just really hope he's not hurt, I think he can handle it mentally because it can't be worse than it's been. However, the worst thing he can do for the Olympics is mess up his back and miss the claycourt season. I am concerned but hopefully Gilles and Thierry know what they're doing.

well, hope so, although he also insisted that he knew what he was doing while dragging that knee injury into a year-long of suffering

But this is so true, FOR BOTH. And the French media have their share in that. They just keep telling all the time that both have a bad DC-record, which is of course true, but one also has to consider the opposition they faced:

Richard played his heart out in gruelling matches against the likes of Safin, Youzhny and Davydenko year after year between 2005 and 2007
Gilles lost to guys like Ferrer, Djokovic, Berdych, Melzer

while the percieved French Davis Cup hero Joe Wilfried Tsonga only once beat a Top 20 player- Stepanek in 2008. When the great Joe had to play his only match against a Top 10 guy, Nadal last year, he made six games.

Having said that, I am not sure that Gilles will have to play on Friday, it may well be Benneteau, sacrificed like in Canada. And Gilles might well score the decisive point against Harrison on Sunday, unless Forget comes up with Llodra again.

Some good news: Forget said at the press conference that Gilles told him the MRI came back negative and his back is fine so hopefully he can be 100% for the claycourt season.

It's good news, although I didn't really think he has some torn muscle or anything, just a back spasm is quite enough to make playing tennis hell. But still, it's good to know that he thinks he has no trouble playing 5 set matches. His ailing back though, is probably the reason why he was serving 14% the first set in that Murray's match. I just read about Forget's interview, and he cited that Richard has injury and can't go. Oh well, I guess if Gilles is willing then...I totally don't mind if he just sits there the whole weekend not playing, but then, I don't think Gilles would like it though. I bet he rather goes in and loses then sit at the bench the entire weekend.

So I guess now we should just look at the bright side...we'll get great pics , and since he's so close to his hometown, he gets to see his friends and family, and gets some early practice on clay to prepare for Monte Carlo.

Yes, the positive thing is that without match practice he does awful on his first clay tournament ( eg. 2009, when he lost to Beck in MC), but when he plays something before like last year Casablanca he does better.

I love this anecdote Gilles today puts his socks on the wrong side and said it was to take care of his back and reveals that during IW it was Karine who put on his socks

Sadly, Tennis Channel is broadcasting DC (I was hoping that ESPN would). Oh well, I'm sure there'll be stream *fingers crossed*. I will try recording the stream, Les.

Thanks Soulage for the news.
I'm glad Karine was there in IW, or Gilles would have gone to court without socks .

Oh, and he arrived last nite to training, after traveling all day (because a lot of delay at the airport due to the strike), managed to practice a bit with Mahut here. There is also an itw http://video.lequipe.fr/video/tennis...g=3a53a1510f9s . Don't know what he said, he just looked very cheerful there . I guess he's happy to be there, even though we aren't . Don't know what Mahut did behind his back at 1:42, , Nico is such a character, love him.

I think the USTA is streaming the matches for free on their website so you should be able to watch there.

I love Nico too, can't wait to start struggling through his book with my poor French.

I'm curious to find out who Gilles' fave is for captain, does anyone who speaks French know if he said anything about it in this video? Since I read in the Arnaud forum that the players apparently made their picks already.

Gilles signed up for Nice, which means he'll play non-stop Madrid/Rome/Nice/Roland Garros . Well, I figure he can't avoid Nice forever, it's his hometown tournament and so he'll have to succumb to pressure of playing there sooner or later . Ah well, so this year it is.

Despite the dismal result on clay so far, I can't wait for Gilles' clay season to start . 6 tournaments that will likely determine his fate for Olympics. Allez Gilles!

I think he plays better with matches so I'm not too upset as long as he's not injured. Plus, it gives him more chances to get points for the Olympics.
