Rios/Joyce d. Black/Ullyett 3-6 7-6 6-1 in New Haven R1 1996.

Rios really deserved that Australian Open 1998 title given what was discovered about Korda. If only he had won that. Now he seems to be best known for being the only male number one without a career Slam title. At least that usually saves Moya from 'the worst world number one' tag. lol

Although it's bad for him to be slamless, he doesn't need slams to be called the most talented player in the last 20 years. Just imagine him with the mental of Djokovic...

And didn't Korda test positive shortly after he won Australia? The obvious conclusion is that he might have been on the stuff when he crushed Rios in the Australian final 62 62 62. Whether Rios won a slam or not though doesn't take away from the quality of tennis he played when he was at his best, he just floated and flowed around that court and could hit shots nobody else would even dream of. That is his legacy, the artful tennis he played. Had he been about two inches taller and 10-15 pounds stronger, with a better serve, his mental would have been correspondingly stronger and he might have gone down as the greatest ever. I think his mental deficiencies were an offspring of his physical shortcomings. he had the skills to compete with the big boys but just not the physicality over the long haul. To me, his genius was never so clear as those two times he whooped Agassi - in Miami final and Grand Slam Cup final, both in 98. At times Rios seemed to be toying with Agassi and you never saw that. Also, in Munich in that final, one time Rios slipped and fell at the service line while backpedaling to hit an overhead. He fell on his butt - yet still maintained the composure to hit an overhead winner while sitting on his bottom. Incredible!

If mental strength commensurated with physical prowess then John Isner would have been GOAT and Rod Laver would have been a ginger Mug.

Those quotes are indeed very compelling. Has any other player in tennis history ever received such harsh and direct criticism? Usually tennis people are very diplomatic in talking about their peers. Rios was indeed a renegade. As they say, "The maverick always stands out." As did Marcelo Rios. This book is going to be a fun read. Can't wait to get the sucker.

Topspindoctor just hates talented players. Like many Nadaltards, being himself a mediocrity he feels uncontrollable envy towards people who are talented enough to succeed while preserving their individuality.

I know people who traveled around the world to watch Rios play tennis, to Monte Carlo, Paris, Portugal, France, NY. Too bad he only had a short reign as one of the best. When Rios body broke down and fell to injury, the sport lost a great renegade and talent. Tennis sorely lacks a villain character today and Rios was your ultimate tennis villain.
