Offcourse it's no surprise since he hasn't been playing for quite a while, but I was hoping he'd maybe play in BCN to say goodbye

Corretja Calls Time on Professional Career
Alex Corretja, who won tennis’ circuit-ending finale (now known as the Tennis Masters Cup) in 1998 and soon after soared to World No. 2 in the INDESIT ATP Rankings, officially announced his retirement from professional tennis during Spain’s Davis Cup play-off tie against Italy in Santander on Saturday.

Corretja, a two-time winner of the ATP’s sportsmanship award, also was considered one of the most charismatic and charming players to ever grace the ATP circuit.

“I am retiring with the tranquility that I have given 100 per cent all the time,” said 32-year-old Corretja, who has struggled to overcome an eye injury. “I am very proud of what I have achieved, and I am happy and content with my tennis career.

“I appreciate the recognition people still show to me. I think this is very special. I have been very happy being a tennis player and would like to take this opportunity to thank the tournament directors and ATP for their support throughout my career.”

During his 16-season professional career, Corretja served on the ATP Player Council in 1996-97 and 2002-03. It was during his role as President in 1997-98 that he had the most instrumental impact on the ATP circuit as he was among the players who led the charge to implement the STARS Program, an ATP program whereby players make themselves readily available to media, sponsors and broadcasters. The STARS Program often is credited with infusing the ATP with its fan-friendly, media-friendly environment.

“Alex Corretja embodied everything a ‘star’ stands for: class, integrity, charm, enthusiasm, hard work, commitment and great sportsmanship,” said Horst Klosterkemper, ATP CEO, Europe. “On behalf of all his friends at the ATP, we wish him the best of luck and hope that he remains very involved in tennis and the ATP.”

Corretja captured 17 ATP singles and three doubles titles, with his first title in Buenos Aires in 1994. His last ATP event was in April 2005 in Estoril, Portugal, where he lost in the first round to compatriot Feliciano Lopez. He compiled a 438-281 career singles record.

In 1998, Corretja became the first Spaniard since Manuel Orantes in 1976 to win the ATP World Championships, the predecessor to the Tennis Masters Cup (to be played Nov. 12-19 in Shanghai). He won two ATP Masters Series events (1997-Rome; 2001-Indian Wells).

Corretja was twice a Roland Garros finalist (1998, 2001) and helped Spain win their first ever Davis Cup title over Australia in 2000. He finished in the Top 10 of the INDESIT ATP Rankings in 1998 and 2000, placing a career-high No. 2 on February 1, 1999.

In 1996 and 1998, Corretja was voted by his playing peers as the winner of the ATP’s Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award.

Yo no me daba cuenta.

Corretja improvisó a menudo.

Corretja announces retirement

As much as tennis fans all over the world might feel sadness at Alex Corretja’s decision to retire, the man himself has no regrets. Speaking on the day when his retirement was officially marked by a special ceremony during Spain’s Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie against Italy in Santander, Corretja said he will head into retirement without a backward glance.

No regrets for Corretja

“I don’t have any mixed feelings,” said the 32-year-old from Barcelona, whose 15-year career was curtailed by a stubborn eye injury. “My emotions are clear. I am very happy about everything I achieved and everything I did in my life on and off the court. I gave 100 per cent all the time and I’m leaving the profession of tennis very happy about the way I achieved everything.”

Corretja’s biggest achievement as a player was winning the Masters Cup indoors in Hanover in 1998, when, having already saved match points to get past Pete Sampras in the semis, he came from two sets down in the final to beat compatriot Carlos Moya in five sets.

Corretja won a further 16 titles on the ATP tour, was twice runner-up at Roland Garros (in 1998 and 2001) and reached a career high of No. 2 in the ATP rankings.

Spanish Davis Cup stalwart

He also excelled when playing Davis Cup, appearing 20 times for Spain, most recently when partnering Feliciano Lopez in doubles in the 2003 final against Australia in Melbourne.

Undoubtedly his greatest achievement in Davis Cup came in 2000, when he helped his team defeat Australia in Barcelona to win the competition for the first time in history, but a special place will always remain in Corretja’s heart for the day, in April 2002, when he came from two sets down to beat Sampras on grass at the Westside Tennis Club in Houston during a World Group quarterfinal.

“Even now when I talk about it, it seems like kind of a miracle, because it was not normal to beat Sampras from two sets to love down on grass in America,” said Corretja. “You know, you hang in there. Some days you feel like you have something that you deserve and you don’t get it; other days you don’t expect anything and you have big surprises.

“The greatest moments are when you are on the court and the people are behind you. It’s something very special. When you play a regular tournament you play for one person; when you play for your country you play for many people and that is something I will always keep in my mind.”

Trophies not most important for Corretja

Yet for all that he was one of the most accomplished players of his generation, Corretja does not want to be remembered for trophies or titles. Ask him what makes him most proud about his career and the answer has little to do with how much silverware he won.

“Being recognised as a good person,” he answered. “That’s the most important thing for me and that’s what my parents thought was most important ever since I was a kid. Of course it’s nice if people recognise your titles but that will be secondary in the future, it won’t be the most important thing. The most important thing is that people remember me as someone that always tried to be clear with everyone and honest.”

hey there

I met the big man in Madrid and got the chance to talk to him twice. What an amazing guy, easily the nicest pro I've ever met. I think he's doing very well for himself now as a tennis commentator for Spanish TV. All the best to Alex.

How lucky you are! I am still dying to meet Alex... I've heard many nice things about him and his wife Marta fr fans!
