I wonder if it's possible to build the Asian circuit around Australian Open? With Chennai/Auckland/Sydney/Brisbane preceding the AO, KL/Bangkok following it, and Tokyo & Shanghai rounding it out.

I also wonder what will happen with Stockholm, Vienna, Basel, Moscow and the other indoor tournaments? All will be played during February? Yes, that's the way. 12 tournaments in February and two in March.

This should always have been the aim, as it's the same/proximate time zone. Then the Australian Open can truly hold claim to be the Asian-Pacific Slam, not just in words (like now) but in its place in the schedule.

The fact is, success in DC is largely determined by what country you come from or play for in the first place, which most players haven't had any control over.

Moscow is not moving anywhere. They are barely finding money to keep the tournament year after year. No way they can afford splitting it in two and holding ATP's one separately in February. And then there is a weather issue. Moscow in February is too cold place to travel to after spending a month Down Under.

I think this would be an excellent idea. It makes the most sense both logistically & geographically. They could have Bangkok/Tokyo/Shanghai in February and then move Bercy to Shanghai's current spot in early October with Stockholm/Vienna preceding it and Basel/WTF following it.

There must be financial reasoning behind holding Shanghai/Tokyo in October. Otherwise it just doesn't make sense.

Unless they flip the poles and change the weather patterns, Asian swing in Feb is not possible.
Only way it is possible is if they make it wholly indoors.

I'm aware of that. But Tokyo has plenty of indoor facilities, so does Shanghai (they held YEC there). And KL and Bangkok are already indoor events.

Beijing & Tokyo would be the only 2 cities in Asian swing affected by climate if the schedule was changed to February. As large as both cities are, I'm sure there are probably indoor facilities available that could be used.

I don't know about Tokyo but Shaghai's stadium is incredibly beautiful due to the fact it closes like a flower. So the current stadium where they hold the tournament can be played indoors. It would be good if it's played indoors, as it will offset the reduction in the indoor season.

It would be December and January mainly and AO in February. Does it rain a lot in early-mid February in Melbourne?

The problem is that they'll find it hard to move the AO. It currently takes place during the summer holidays in Australia which allows the organisers to generate record amounts of revenue from ticket sales. If the children go back to school before the AO starts, they'd have some trouble, unless they can somehow generate additional revenue from the TV networks.

Actually, Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo where Japan Open is held is an indoor arena as well, just with retractable roof.

I think we have solved the ATP calendar conundrum. Let's email this thread to Federer and the ATP, so they can start focusing on the tennis from now on.

But they don't even need to move AO. Right now it's, what, 5 weeks between Melbourne and Indian Wells?
Put Bangkok immediately after AO, Tokyo next, then Shanghai Masters. This way it would be 2 weeks between first GS and first Masters of the season and 2 weeks separating Shanghai and IW.
