Is there a source for this or did he just mention this on one of your regular catch-up phonecalls?

This is the strongest area level wise. Weakest mentally. I would call this a couple of levels below retardation as far as mental strength goes

i always thought 1988 - 1995 is the greatest era ever......the best blend of champions, depth, variety, racket and string technology, surfaces......

This is actually right. I'd say top 2, not 3, Federer is probably worse choker than Murray now

This era isn't all bad. It's not the strongest, but it does have Federer and Murray. That does count for something. Unfortunately, the current top two drag it down a lot.

It's the most one-dimensional era ever. <- that's the only fact worth claiming.

90% of the people on this site have never seen a real clay court match or a grass court one.
Be glad that you have the chance to watch some proper indoor tennis this week in Metz.

isnt it just the opposite? fed wouldn't even be there if it weren't for all the weakness 5 year ago, and murray, well there must be something terribly wrong with him, either mentally or technically.

Yup, without doubt. Laver? Borg? Sampras? They can't compare to the muscles of Nadal and the bulk of Nalbandian.

Tsonga would lay the beat down on anyone from any era with one arm tied behind his back.

Which is why it is hard to see Federer or Murray winning a slam these days.

the Eighties you had more than 3 great players (Borg, Mac, Connors, Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Wilander - okay Borg only at the start) & the rest of the field included players such as Cash, Mecir, Leconte, Curren, Noah, & later, Agassi, who were all capable of beating the best players on the biggest stages & at least getting to slam finals.
Agassi should be counted in the 90s rather than in the 80s or in the 00s.
Leconte was a huge talent and at times, brilliant to watch but if he were active today, people would call him a choking mug. With all his talent, he doesn't have much to show for it.
Cash and Noah had 1 slam each. You could just as easily bring Roddick, Del Potro, Moya,...to the current table at this rate. (well, Moya is no longer active but has played against the current top players)
Not forgetting Safin and Hewitt with 2 slam titles.

I can understand that people moan about today's players because that's fun but they're getting often too nostalgic about previous players in comparison.

Australian Open semi-finalists:
2 slam winners (17 between them), a 2-time finalist and a 1 time semi-finalist

French Open semi-finalists
3 slam winners (27 slams between them) and a 3-time finalist

Wimbledon semi-finalists
2 slam winners (12 slams between them), a 3-time finalist and a 1-time finalist

U.S. Open semi-finalists
3 slam winners (29 slams between them) and a 3-time finalist

I haven't read the thread but does ANY era even begin to compare to this?

dont question me again. i am not in the lying business. i dont have to lie. my brand of truth is hell and i like it that way.

evidently justin gimmelstob ran into him last weekend. sampras told him that he believes this might be the strongest era ever.

justin talked about his conversation with pete during the d-pot vs nole davis cup match in NO uncertain terms.

This has made it easier for the masters of the currently viable trades to dominate.

Every era with its distinct or less distinct dynamics had different strengths and weaknesses. As for entertainment value(, which sport ultimately should be about,) there are many other decades which I rank way higher than the current era. There's hardly any room for contrasts today.
