Default Re: Professor Sampras Believes This Is the Strongest Era Ever

Havent seen the 80s era myself. But this era completely wins hands down over the 90s.

In 90s, one of the All time greats ,Sampras was there and to challenge him nobody was there consistently long enough.unfortunately Agassi was at his best quite intermittently and even at his best he wasnt able to challenge Sampras for Long. Courier was at his best just when Sampras was coming to his best. But he somehow boiled off after 93. So nobody really outstaged Sampras over a longer period of time. Becker and Edberg had come to their twilight.
And Sampras was too strong for Boris.

Otherwise there were some Clay Fishes. Muster,Bruguera,Berasategui. Put them out of their water and they would....

Some quite talented blokes were there who could have posed serious challenges but somehow could'nt Like Kafelnikov,Michael Stich,Krajicek etc. They has their own temperament to blame ?

So really nobody was close to challenge an All Time Top 5 who was Sampras.

But this era. One of all time great plays 4 5 seasons in Top Gear Federer, another one Knocks him off his perch for the next couple of years completely, and then another one knocks him off the next season. This era is just incredible.

However the 80s as i havent seen it first hand would be quite some other story with likes of Mc enroe,Connors,Borg,Lendl,Becker,Edberg... That must be quite an era..

For me This Era >>> 90s and This Era ??? 80's

Don't know how three players can make a whole era strong, like somebody said, we are witnessing the weakest background of the greatest players in open era, watching bunch of chokers, mugs and low quality players outside Top 3.

Only Fedalovic is able to create an epic show on courts, we have seen only two non-top 4 players in slam semis this year, which says pretty much about this ERA.
Back in 90's, GS semifinals set was utterly different in every slam.

On WTA every slam this year had different winner and people whine that it's low quality, non-consistent players, etc. Here it's only the top 3 winning and people whine again, because the top 3 are too dominant etc. I'm not sure there is a solution where people are not going to whine

dont blame the field if the top 3 are all time greats.

that being said, now watch the field eventually reel these 3 in.

Top 3 are great. No. 4 has been disappointing so far. Rest of the field is largely shit.

In the Eighties you had more than 3 great players (Borg, Mac, Connors, Lendl, Edberg, Becker, Wilander - okay Borg only at the start) & the rest of the field included players such as Cash, Mecir, Leconte, Curren, Noah, & later, Agassi, who were all capable of beating the best players on the biggest stages & at least getting to slam finals.

eventually? it took 4 years for joker to make the top 2 a top 3. i see no reeling going on here. in a year or two fed and nadal will be done, but that hardly counts as the field reeling them in.

Every past, current and future top player will fall
Ouahab will never beat Federer
Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo will never win a slam

I remember the 90s they had more good players but only 2 great players late 90's that is....I mean early 90's were great but when Pete Sampras was winning Wimbledon playing only 1 top 10 player one year I mean it was almost Murray like except Murray cant win shit......It is tougher to play in this era because of Federer and Nadal and Djokovic for other players but early 90's had their charm in my mind

Default Re: Professor Sampras Believes This Is the Strongest Era Ever

yes it is
back in the days Sampras was utter shit on clay
back in the days you had clay court specialists
and fast court specialists
hard court specialists

nowadays players don't rely solely on serves like Sampras Kafelnokov but they rely on return of serve;footwork;speed and they do it well on ALL surfaces and it has gotten harder because of the slowness of the surfaces which wasn't the case 10-15 years ago

Federer;Nadal and Djokovic have proven that with the exception of Andy Murray

Sampras would have never been able to withstand a match of the quality of the 2006 Rome match between Federer and Nadal or the 2011 match between Federer and Djokovic in Paris this year or the Federer-Del Potro or Federer-Haas in 2009 even at his best

Courier nor Agassi or Chang could not have played a superb match like the one Federer and Nadal played at the 2008 Wimbledon final or the 2009 Federer-Roddick match even if Federer played like utter shit

don't see Rafter playing a match like the Federer-Del Potro at the the 2009 USO match or last year and this year's match between Federer-Djokovic
