That first one in Basel is indoors. Sometimes Basel is classified as carpet, sometimes as indoor hardcourt. But I'm not sure that result is very relevant since it was six years ago and Roger was only 17.

The court in Madrid is Greenset, btw, a hardcourt, and pretty much the same as they use for the (outdoors) TMC at Houston. Plays very fast. Should suit Roger, but took him a while to get used to it last year.

Then why do you think so?

You mean Agassi would be out before he could meet Rogi or vice versa or you guess both of them will be out before they can face to face.

Sorry guys, it's possible Roger may not play in Madrid. If the article below is correct, he told them yesterday he wasn't playing, but they persuaded him to think again. He'll make a decision today.

Bummer for Madrid if he doesn't.

http://www.abc.es/abc/pg041015/prens...AC-DEP-076.asp

MADRID.

You could try Babel fish (http://babel.altavista.com/tr); it's not brilliant but gives a reasonable gist of the contents. I cleaned it up but it still sounds a bit strange:

The nail in the coffin was Roger Federer, the number world number one and great attraction, when he tried to join the masses and announced yesterday that he would not go either. The alarm spread in the Masters Series and it was only after multiple negotiations, calls amongst organizers and the ATP (even the CEO Mark Miles) that the Swiss temporarily reconsidered his decision, to give to a definitive answer this morning and to Manolo Santana in person. In any case, it seems he'll most likely insist on not travelling to Madrid.

It will indeed be interesting, but it will have to wait until next year. Because Madrid is on indoor HARD, not clay.

I too hope Federer doesn't pull out since with such an exodus of top players it leaves the field wide open for Agassi to sweep through, but from a partisan British perspective I am already chuckling at the thought of Henman being top seed at a TMS event. Try to live up to the seeding and win a match here for the first time, eh Tim?

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

what's the different, to many players...clay time=hard time, hard time=clay time, just the same

Rogi will be too nice if he really doesn't want to go and yet being persuaded to though I personally prefer him to play here than Paris.

Wouldn't it better if Tim can defend his Paris TMS?

Is fate trying to send him a message here with all these travel problems? Please Andre, don't go to such trouble on my account.

Hi RF, the weather is... decent at the moment. Very sunny and bright but also chilly. Two days ago it was the modern-day manifestation of Noah's Ark across the South East, and I got caught in it for half an hour. When the wind manages to make it rain horizontally, you know the conditions are bad.

Of the two of them I'd hope Federer could win Paris since I like the event and he's said it has "potential", but this was one of his biggest indoor results from last year and it would be stupid to miss out if he's fit, especially when the field is so weak. I don't see the problem with playing three weeks in a row, bearing in mind that unlike Moya and Roddick he doesn't have a DC final to worry about after Houston (and won't for some time, unless depth improves in the Swiss side).

It would be great if Henman could defend, I don't imagine for a moment he will, but he needs points anywhere he can get them and I'm really worried that he's going to miss out on the TMC for the second time in three years because of another injury (he had the bad shoulder in 2002, now it's his back). Actually, I'm hoping for another Federer-Henman final in Basel after their match three years ago, which would show whether Federer can now beat Henman indoors as well as outdoors, at an event where the conditions seem to suit the older man much better.

Default Re: Rogi Fed in TMS Madrid!

I can see sense in Roger pulling out of Madrid even though it was a perfect opportunity to win a record 4th TMS title.
Basel is next week isn't it? Roger probably wants to remain in Switzerland and be 100% ready for his home tournament rather then fly around Switzerland -> Madrid -> Switzerland -> Paris

Even if Roger pulls out I dont think Andre will win. This tournament is in Spain, indoors. Don't think he will be able to reproduce the form he showed in USA.
