Ms Tangerine, I have to spread rep around, but thanks for your comment. That may have been the corniest joke I ever made on this forum, but I'm glad you liked it.

Roddick serves tennis with a side of ham

Rock-n-Racquets plays to crowd

By C. Ray Hall
crayhall@courier-journal.com
The Courier-Journal

Surely some of the fans at Freedom Hall last night had seen Andy Roddick play tennis.

Others, no doubt, had seen Serena Williams, his doubles partner, perform her wonders on the court.

But few, surely, had seen a man try to close out a set by serving while holding a potted poinsettia. With a ball boy tossing the ball.

That's what Roddick did when he and Williams led 5-4 over John Isner and Caroline Wozniacki in the opening act of last night's exhibition.

The ball-boy ploy didn't work, so Roddick had Williams toss the ball on the next point. One exchange later, Roddick -- still cradling the poinsettia with his left arm -- hit a forehand past Wozniacki to close out the 36-minute 6-4 victory.

That set opened the ICAP Energy Rock-n-Racquets show, which also included men's and women's singles. (Wozniacki defeated Williams 8-4; Roddick topped Isner 8-4 in the nightcap.)

Rock-n-Racquets, brought to town by Jonathan Blue's sports-and-entertainment enterprise, BEST, supports Roddick's foundation for at-risk children. The show includes tennis, live and recorded music and a combination emcee-umpire-narrator-provocateur named Wayne Bryan. (Sample patter: "John Isner has been trying to get a date with Caroline Wozniacki the last three years. He hopes to get lucky the next three nights.")

The four-player tour goes to Columbia, S.C., tonight and Knoxville, Tenn., tomorrow afternoon.

Before play, the players signed autographs in the arena's front concourse. Soon the line grew to 150, snaking around a corner toward the concession stand that specializes in pork chop sandwiches.

More than one female autograph seeker showed up with a Serena Williams doll -- still in the original package, unopened. Some fans peered over the line to sneak a peek at the stars; others held up their cell phones to shoot photos.

Ron Clark, a Hoosier, got a white cap autographed. The scrawls looked so mysterious as to resemble doctor's signatures.

"I'm just glad they brought it here," Clark said of the event, "because there's not much (pro) tennis here. You have to go to Indianapolis or Cincinnati."

Clark's daughter, Katherine, the No. 1 singles player at Jeffersonville High School, also got autographs. Being an exhibition match, Katherine said the point was "just fun."

"Tennis should be fun," her dad said. "Not everybody can make $10 million playing."

Roddick, wearing a white cap backward, certainly had fun, even when flailing at a 137 mph serve from Isner.

Before the first salvo of the night -- a serve by the 6-foot-9 Isner -- Roddick had quipped, "Serena's never returned a serve from Sasquatch." (Williams' return floated into the net; later, she actually aced Isner.)

The second point of the night produced a long, practically artful standoff, with all four players at the net, firing grenades. When it finally ended, the crowd exhaled and Roddick headed toward the exit, waving to the crowd and yelling, "Good night! Thank you!"

He stuck around, of course, playing tennis and playing the crowd. When he sprinted from baseline to baseline in a futile attempt to return a shot, Williams cracked, "Venus (her sister) would've got it."

Looking winded, Roddick replied, "I wish I could argue."

During a long baseline exchange with Wozniacki, Roddick emitted a series of high-pitched grunts, like Maria Sharapova. At one point he staged a John McEnroe-like explosion over a lineswoman's call. Later, sensing the crowd had grown a bit staid, he scolded the fans: "It's a little quiet. This is not golf."

Andy, Serena and rock — oh my!
Pro tennis stars, musicians entertain 4,600 in Columbia for charity

She signed shirt sleeves, posters and tennis balls. Serena Williams is as deft with a Sharpie as she is with a tennis racket.

“Serena, please,” a man begged as Williams was being escorted away.

He awkwardly held a poster to his back, which he presented to Williams.

“It’s OK, I can hold it,” she said, her signature scribbled before he turned around.

Wow, she is fast.

Sure, matches were played at Rock-n-Racquets, the tennis style exhibition presented by The Andy Roddick Foundation at the Colonial Life Arena on Saturday night.

But the real action was before the stars — Roddick, Williams, John Isner and Caroline Wozniacki — hit the court.

Autograph seekers packed the arena’s atrium an hour before the event for the chance to snap a photo while their balls and programs were being signed by the tennis players who were joined by music headliner Gavin Rossdale (more on that later) and USC women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley.

Caitlin Smith brought her own “tennis” ball, which was about the size of a volleyball. Her sister, Courtney, walked the roped-off autograph line, too. Flashes twinkled on the arena concourse like what you might see on an E! red carpet show.

“He’s a good tennis player, and this is for charity,” Courtney, a tennis fan, said when asked why she came.

Yes, the event benefited Roddick’s foundation, which helps neglected, abused, at-risk and seriously ill children. But come on, he’s hot.

“Yup, that helps,” Caitlin said.

Listening to the rapper The Game on his iPhone, Sascha Bajin leaned unnoticed on a rail a few feet away from the signature hounds.

Bajin, Williams’ practice partner, lives in anonymity on the tennis tour, so why was he at an exhibition?

“We’re getting ready for Sydney, so I go everywhere she goes,” he said, referring to the Australian Open. “I’m not going home for Christmas or New Years.”

And if she wants to hit balls at 6 a.m., “I’m up at 5:30 a.m.,” he said.

Former Gamecock heroes Sterling Sharpe, Corey Jenkins and Duce Staley were recognized. NBA veteran Xavier McDaniel was in the building, too.

McDaniel, Duce Staley and Dawn Staley (no relation), even stepped onto the court.

“Stand right there and do not touch a ball,” Roddick told McDaniel, who was subbing during the doubles match. The X-Man, as NBA announcers called him, took some wild swings and, after contact, was walking triumphantly off the court.

“You’re not done,” Roddick nagged.

(I kept wishing that Roddick and Williams had wireless mics, like the NBA and NFL does from time to time.

There were two rock stars, too. Mark Bryan, the Hootie and The Blowfish guitarist sang the national anthem, and funk-rockers Villanova, local rock stars, played the role of houseband.

Rossdale played three songs, two of which — “Comedown” and “Glycerine” — were hits by his band Bush more than 10 years ago.

His set was about as long as the previous paragraph. And I didn’t even get an autograph.

Tennis clinic offers treat for pros, kids
Roddick, Williams give Harbison West Elementary group a thrill of a lifetime
By MISTI N. BAILEY
Special to the State

For a Saturday treat, some families went to see the Columbia City Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

Some college students crammed into coffeehouses, taking a break from studying for final exams.

But a small group of youngsters from Harbison West Elementary had everyone else in town beat.

They took part in a clinic with professional tennis players Andy Roddick, Serena Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and John Isner at the Colonial Life Arena.

The players, who were in town for Saturday night’s Rock-n-Racquets tennis and music extravaganza, played interactive tennis games with the students and Newberry tennis team members.

“(The players) show us a good example,” said 10-year-old Madison Brown, one of the lucky students who participated in the clinic. “I can’t believe that out of all the places they could have gone, they chose to come here. It’s really exciting for us.”

Kelly Cheese, a Newberry College tennis player who was there to help conduct the event, was thrilled to see the little ones’ reactions.

“It’s just really fun to see how the kids react to not only playing the sport but also the celebrity players who they look up to.”

Newberry College along with BEST (Blue Entertainment Sports Television) served as hosts for the event.

In addition to giving kids a once-in-a-lifetime on-court experience and a chance to see some of the world’s top players in action, the event was a great opportunity for Newberry to raise awareness of its tennis program, according to coach Jim Greene.

The youngsters weren’t the only ones excited about the event.

“I did Rock-n-Racquets with Andy last year and loved it,” Williams said. “I had to come back. The best part is getting out here beforehand with the kids. Through the games, you get to interact with them.”

Roddick echoed her sentiment.

“I just want (the kids) to have fun today, even if they never pick up a racket again,” Roddick said. “But, who knows, there may be some superstars out here.”

Rock-n-Racquets is a weekend-long series of exhibition events that raise money for The Andy Roddick Foundation, a non-profit group whose mission is to help at-risk youngsters.

“Our mission statement is ‘Helping children today for tomorrow,’” Roddick said. “We want to impact children who have been abused, neglected, or whose parents just haven’t done what they should have or could have.”

Though the foundation has a serious purpose, Saturday’s clinic was about showing participants — whether or not they ever pick up a racket again — the advantages of playing a sport and how much fun tennis can be.

Based on the smiles on their faces, they succeeded.

Knoxville served by exhibition
Roddick, with help of Williams, promoting tennis elsewhere

By Dave Link
Sunday, December 14, 2008

Two of the biggest stars in pro tennis - along with the biggest star in University of Tennessee men's basketball - hit center stage today at Thompson-Boling Arena.

Andy Roddick and Serena Williams will be playing the Rock-n-Racquets/BB&T charity exhibition with colorful UT basketball coach Bruce Pearl expected to serve as celebrity chair umpire during one of the matches.

Roddick, 26, ranked No. 8 in the world, knows all about UT's rabid sports fans, and he's ready to give them a taste of pro tennis.

"One of our main goals of Rock-n-Racquets is to take tennis to places that don't get a lot of mainstream pro tennis," Roddick said. "We know the tradition of sports in Knoxville with the football program and the two basketball programs (at UT). We're excited to get out there and play."

Doors open at 1 p.m. with matches starting at 2, and it's all for a good cause through the Andy Roddick Foundation.

"Proceeds go to neglected and abused children without much of a chance in life," Roddick said.

Williams, who won the 2008 U.S. Open and is ranked No. 2 in the world, will team with Roddick against touring pros John Isner and Caroline Wozniacki in a traditional set to start the exhibition.

Isner, who is 6-foot-9 and has a blistering serve, is a former Georgia All-American whose highest pro ranking was No. 84 last April. Wozniacki, 18, of Denmark, is ranked No. 13 and considered one of the rising stars on the WTA Tour.

After the mixed doubles, Williams will face Wozniacki in an eight-game pro-set followed by a musical performance by Gavin Rossdale.

Roddick will play Isner in an eight-game pro-set to end the exhibition.

This is the third Rock-n-Racquets exhibition in three days. The same four pros played in Louisville, Ky., on Friday and in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday.

Roddick appreciates the support of his fellow pros.

"Serena has been very supportive of my foundation. She's been great," Roddick said. "It's all for a good cause, and everybody gets to enjoy themselves and play some tennis. Everybody comes out a winner."

Roddick, born in Omaha, Neb., is a big sports fan, especially of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and he followed the Vols' recent football coaching changes.

"I was glad to see (UT) give (Phillip) Fulmer his credit the last game," Roddick said. "I thought he deserved it. It was classy. I saw the (Lane) Kiffin press conference. He was quick to take a shot at Florida. That made for some good TV."

Roddick was in Knoxville in 2000 playing an ATP Challenger event but hasn't been back since.

"I was there eight years ago," Roddick said. "I'm looking forward to getting back there."

Many happy returns at Rock-n-Racquets
Roddick, Williams dazzle crowd

By Dave Link
Originally published 07:56 p.m., December 14, 2008

Andy Roddick may have a career as a stand-up comedian once his playing days are over on the pro tennis tour.

Roddick, ranked No. 8 in the world, delivered one funny one-liner after another Sunday afternoon during the Rock-n-Racquets/BB&T charity exhibition before 3,600 fans at the University of Tennessee’s Thompson-Boling Arena.

One of his best came after he and Serena Williams beat John Isner and Caroline Wozniacki in a tiebreaker to win a pro-set, during which UT basketball coach Bruce Pearl was chair umpire.

“As Coach Pearl knows, it’s tough to be in the shadow of a woman,” Roddick told the crowd before leaving the court while the women warmed up for singles.

Of course, Roddick was referring to Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summitt, who has won eight national titles, and himself, who has won one Grand Slam title to Serena’s nine.

Pearl was every bit the comedian as Roddick. He called a foot fault on Roddick’s first serve of the exhibition-opening mixed doubles, after which Roddick hit a 142-mph serve for a winner.

“Is (Pearl) going to call the score?” Roddick said after the point.

In the next game, Pearl called a 15-love score.

“Can I ask you a question?” Pearl said to Roddick over the PA system. “You win one point, why do you get 15?”

Roddick laughed.

“Why is zero ‘love’?” Pearl said. “In my book it should be 100.”

There also was some banter about the 6-foot-9 Isner choosing to play tennis at Georgia instead of Tennessee.

Isner gave a quick response, to which Roddick said, “They also promised him a degree at Georgia.”

To which there was a quick reply from PA announcer Wayne Bryan, father of the world-class pro doubles team of brothers Mike and Bob Bryan: “It’s tough to get in UT with a 1.5 GPA,” Wayne Bryan said.

Once, when Isner was getting ready to serve, Pearl stopped him. “Hey John, do you have any eligibility left in basketball?” Pearl said.

Isner laughed, and shook his head.

A few minutes later, someone suggested former UT basketball player Dane Bradshaw, sitting courtside, try to return a serve of Williams. Bradshaw tried and netted the return.

Pearl then got out of the umpire’s chair to test Williams’ serve.

Williams, with a poinsettia in her left hand, hit a soft serve, and Pearl drilled it high into the stands.

Pearl made his exit during the mixed doubles, and before being greeted in the concourse by several of his UT players, took the microphone.

“Hey Knoxville, is this not awesome having the greatest tennis players in the world here?” Pearl said.

As the mixed doubles continued, so did the comedy.

During one long rally — with Roddick and Wozniacki doing the rallying — Williams sat down on the court and Isner stood aside. During another point, while Roddick was chasing down a couple of shots, he quipped at Serena, “I’ll get it for you, don’t worry,” and “Just stand there!”

Serena, laughing, raised both arms to congratulate Roddick after he won the point.

After the doubles, Williams beat Wozniacki 6-4 and Roddick beat Isner 6-2, during which Roddick did imitations of Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova, Serena, Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras.

Roddick said the three-day Rock-n-Racquets events raised $300,000 to $350,000 for at-risk youth, and the Andy Roddick Foundation has raised more than $13 million since 2001 for at-risk youth.

Sir Elton John and Billie Jean King take their coaching roles seriously for their annual charity tennis event, WTT Smash Hits, set for Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge. The two longtime friends have already started their preparation by selecting their team lineups for the event. Elton John tabbed Serena Williams to head up his squad while Andy Roddick takes the lead for Team Billie Jean. Joining Williams on Team Elton is former world No. 1 in doubles Anna Kournikova who is making her 7th consecutive Smash Hits appearance, Tommy Haas who is ranked No. 17 in singles, and former top 15 player Jan-Michael Gambill, a WTT favorite with the Boston Lobsters.

Along with Roddick, King rounded out her roster with 3-time Grand Slam singles champion Lindsay Davenport, current world No. 1 in doubles Liezel Huber, 2009 NCAA singles champion Devin Britton and local favorite and former world No. 6 Chanda Rubin of Lafayette, La.

In its 17-year history, WTT Smash Hits has raised more than $9 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF). The event, presented by the Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation and hosted by the Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF), will benefit EJAF and AIDS charities serving the Greater Baton Rouge area.

The two teams will face off in a modified World TeamTennis match, playing one set each of men's singles, women's doubles, men's doubles and mixed doubles. Sets are first to five games with a 9-point tiebreaker at 4-4. Games are no-ad, scoring is cumulative and service lets are playable.
