Serving for Tsunami Relief Fund
Kournikova, Roddick will play to raise money
By DALE ROBERTSON
Copyright 2005 Houston Chronicle

Jim McIngvale and Jim Courier had been conversing about putting on a senior event at McIngvale's Westside Tennis Club next November. But, for the moment, that has become a backburner matter because of McIngvale's role in raising money for the Bush-Clinton Tsunami Disaster Relief Fund.

On Jan. 31, McIngvale and Courier, through the latter's new production company, InsideOut Sports & Entertainment, will put on the Serving for Tsunami Relief tennis exhibition at 7 p.m. at Toyota Center.

Courier, a former top-ranked American, is among the players who have committed to participate. Joining him will be Andy Roddick, John McEnroe, Chris Evert and Anna Kournikova. Courier will be on site twisting arms at the Australian Open the next two weeks soliciting participants.

"It was a very easy decision," Courier said in a statement. "As soon as Jim mentioned the idea, I was in."

McIngvale reports that Roddick, the current top-ranked American, told him he would be part of the talent mix "even if he's in the Australian Open final" the previous day. A number of celebrities are expected to join in as well.

Tickets will be priced from $20 to $150 with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Bush-Clinton fund, which McIngvale chairs in Houston. The Toyota Center, operated by the Rockets, offered what McIngvale called a "significant" discount to host its first tennis competition since opening in the fall of 2003.

"There's going to be some very high-caliber tennis," McIngvale said. "We'll have some singles, some doubles, some of everything — just great family entertainment."

Wow, that's awfully.... brave of him.

I realize it's for charity and all and that it's Roddick's choice, but organizers need to stop relying on him so much.

When is Andy scheduled for his 1st post-AO tournament?

Brave is a nice euphemism for.... STUPID, IDIOTIC, MORONIC, RIDICULOUS... not to mention I'm not even sure if it'd be mathematically logistically possible to play the AO final in the evening in Australia and then take the (extremely long) flight to Houston at 7pm or soon thereafter. Someone would have to do the math. But, he has to make the AO Final first and based on his ankle issue and the fact that he was staying back and not coming to net on Rebound Ace, I don't quite see that happening anyway

He has a week off after the AO where he is scheduled to do one exhibition with Mardy on Feb. 3 (in Austin), then he plays San Jose, where he's defending champion. the starting date on that is Feb 7.

Mack, especially, needs to stop relying on Andy - I agree with ya darnyelb... especially since Andy is like physically incapable of saying no to that man.

One could leave Melbourne as late as noon on Monday, January 31 (local time) and arrive in Houston around 4:30 p.m. (local time) Monday since you gain back 17 hours. It's about 18 hours of actual flying--21 & 1/2 hours with connections.

Ok so it's technically, mathematically, logistically possible. That does not make it any less STUPID

More on the thing in Houston
-------------
None of Andre Agassi's many fans and friends in Houston would dream of rooting against their man when he faces Roger Federer in the Australian Open quarterfinals, but ...

Should Agassi lose, there's a chance — a good chance, some surmise — that he will participate in the Serving for Tsunami Relief event at Toyota Center on Jan. 31. He and Jim McIngvale, who is ramrodding the event to raise money for the Bush-Clinton relief fund, are buddies and Agassi wasn't able to participate in the U.S. Clay Courts or the Masters Cup at McIngvale's Westside Tennis Club last year.

For the moment, Andy Roddick and John McEnroe are slated to play a singles exhibition, but, should Andre show up, he'd play Roddick and McEnroe would likely just play mixed doubles opposite Jim Courier, whose new production company is putting on the event gratis. Anna Kournikova and Chris Evert have also signed on.

Because Courier is obligated to help broadcast the first night final in Melbourne for Australian television, he'll be in transit for more than 20 hours Monday en route to Houston, arriving just in time to grab his rackets and head to Toyota Center. Should Roddick make the final, he'll be on the flight with Courier.

"It's not even worth mentioning," Courier says of the arduous trip, "not when you consider what we're raising money for."
