I don’t say dish either and even get my umlauts right, but the Dutch G is beyond me. It would take ages of practice to produce even a reasonable likeness.

When I was there it seemed a lot more complicated. We had dinner (Riistafel? is that right?) at a man’s house whose name was Gerard. I never quite got it right. German ch seems a softer sound to me.
But you know sometimes in the U.S. students are actually taught to say ish for ich. But I hate that sound even though some German accents are quite close to saying ish. |
