Argh I missed the first two sets. What I saw about Rich was convincing. Against big servers, it only hangs by a thread. Frustrating.

Exactly. Once Richard stopped freaking out and Karlovic cooled off Richard showed an aggressive style we haven't seen in years - just too difficult to sustain that high level and then it was a matter of a few bad points at the wrong time.

ANyway LOVED his fight the last 2 sets - best shot of the match - his chair toss

Ivo is always dangerous and not surprised at the result.

Credit to Karlovic who played great in the first 2 sets, Gasquet started very slow and Karlovic was dominating! Gasquet then started to play great in the 3rd and 4th reading Karlovic's serve and hitting great shots! He had the break in the 4th and sadly he couldn't hold it! Karlovic got lucky with the net cord at *2-1 down in the TB. He saved the 1st MP and he nearly saved the 2nd.

I really liked that Richard was moving in on Karlovic's 2nd serves and not going back as he usually does which was good to see. Richard showed great emotion in the match, pumping himself up which I always like to see.

Onto the next tournament Metz but before that possibly the Davis Cup SF vs Spain.

Looks like my 6-7 6-7 6-7 prediction when the draw came out was too generous. Broken 4 times by Karlovic?

Didn't watch the match but I heard he was passive in the first two sets. Serves him right for not learning his lesson after so long. And well done losing that break in the fourth. If he had held on, given Karlovic's 5-set record, he could have won

US Open - Décla > Gasquet déçu d'avoir perdu

US Open - Declaration> Gasquet disappointed to have lost

By Flora Chaduc, Friday, September 2, 2011 at 11:43
The reaction of Richard Gasquet after losing to Ivo Karlovic in four sets 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4):

"It's frustrating to have lost. Against him, I knew what to expect. It's frustrating to have a bad start, I have not played well. Yes it surprised me from the baseline, he played well. (...) I made two bad sets, which is a bit frustrating. a 4-2 in the fourth when I lead, I make two double-faults that n 'have no place and that's what cost me the set. After he made a nice tie-break, it is solid at 5-4, 6-5. it is clear that he is still a very very big game, but hey, I made some mistakes I should not have done. I still well back in the third and fourth set, but I served poorly, I made mistakes the baseline, I was a little tense because I knew I had to win the service game. It's really that of 4-2 I would have liked to win fifth set. "

In first two sets the problem was that he is SO used to returning very defensively that he started to panic when he knew he had to be more offensive. In his normal game, he almost never ever returns second serves aggressively. In fact, when he finally adjusted in third set, his returning in both third and fourth were actually some of the best he has done all year. He was in most of Karlovic's serve games. He was taking backhand returns on the rise which he never ever does and even claims he can't do it.. while in 3rd and 4th sets he proved that he can, he just doesn't want too against regular players cause he can beat them (well most of them) with playing very passive on returns.

Since 2007, Richard has passed second round just once (last year) at final major of the year. This is from a player who wants to be in top 10. Donald Young has passed second round more often.

Not a good record since 2007. What do you think about Davis Cup? Do you think he should play or first will he get selected?

I think Monfils and Tsonga if healthy have more confidence and class than Richard for France to have best chance. Against Spain in Spain on clay, it won't matter though... The only hope is that Monfils can beat Ferrer on clay that's it. I mean Richard barely beat Mayer who was cramping badly... other than that he plays very poor in DC. Maybe even worse than at US Open.

To be fair, he hasn't had easy draws (Nadal and Haas, was it?) but still...

He has lost a bunch of tight matches in NY though. Ginepri, Hewitt, Haas, Karlovic... He's a mess mentally
