It's different. It is easier to be nice to a fellow that comes up after you, where winning is second nature - than to look up to beating someone when you've never won before. The two situations are completely incomparable.

Disrespecting legends when you're a nobody in the game still is as cocky as it can get...

Good

I've always hoped that Novak would succeed Roger, as he was the nearest of the best players for playing style and attitude on court (daring, active and offensive rather than reacting/defensive like Murray), better late than never

I was very happy for Nole on sunday despite Roger still being my favorite

They have very different personalities, Fed sincere/direct, Novak seducer/affectionate, but I like both of them.

They've had tough relationships from the beginning (Roger reacting harsh after Novak's fake injuries against Wawrinka in Davis cup, Novak telling Wilson that he would destroy Fed), but they've respected each other more and more, Fed saying that whoever didn't think Novak was a great player was a fool and that their matches depended on a few points, Novak saying that he respected more and more Roger and Nadal's consistency over the years.

Wilander saying Novak was a mixt of Fed and Agassi has a point, I think : some rather see him like Agassi, with mechanical flat shots, some see him more like Fed, creative on court (his matches in Roma were great ), I'm the second case

Roger Federer says it's good for tennis that Novak Djokovic won Wimbledon and became the top-ranked player.

The only player who has beaten him this year said Tuesday that Djokovic has earned his success after compiling a 48-1 record in 2011.

"He deserves to become No. 1 after an immense start to the year," said Federer, who defeated the 24-year-old Serb in the French Open semifinals. "When you lose so rarely, your confidence carries you a long way."

The third-ranked Federer said it wasn't a big surprise that Djokovic dethroned Rafael Nadal after having beaten the former top-ranked Spaniard in four previous finals in 2011.

"And he's proved before at Wimbledon that he can play on grass," said Federer, a few days before the start to Switzerland's Davis Cup match against Portugal. "It's good for tennis that it happened."

I was wondering when this thread would surface
Quite seriously, though, I don't think they hate each other anymore (if they ever did). There was always a sense of grudging, reluctant respect between them. They obviously had issues at one point, but it appears to be a thing of the past.

I think they respect each other as tennis players, but they have different personalities. Not everyone is meant to be BFFs. What's important is to have the maturity and social acumen to recognize that just because someone isn't 'your type' doesn't mean you have to dislike them.

Looking at that video from AO2009, you can't help but wonder what Roger hoped to achieve by saying those things. I mean after AO2008, it was clear that Nole likes to prove himself and be challenged. This might sound nuts, but it's almost like Roger (and some other players and commentators) needled and ripped on Nole's weaknesses in order to make him a better player. Like when the veterans pick on the rookie; it's for his own good, to toughen him up.

Despite enjoying Nole's tennis and being a Fed fan I am actually happy NOT to see many Fedovics around telling both Fed fans and Djoko fans how they should feel about each other! I don't buy into that McEnroe's and Wilander's theory that you gotta have some animosity between players. But the Fedal thing just disgusts me! Actually, I think most of the Fed-Nadal being BFF is a bit over the top.

Simply put: both Roger and Novak like to beat each other. I see a growing respect for each other (lets face it, their relationship was a bit nasty), which is good. Nole grew up a bit (the same can't be said about his parents though) and Roger finally realized that Nole is a force to reckon.

I, myself, am a Murderer (ROFL). I actually felt a bit of relief at Wimbledon, because I found myself cheering a bit more for Murray to win it (just for the sake of him winning a GS, specially at Wimbledon). But, in the end, my Murderer wish got, aham, murdered.

100% agreed. I don't believe in Fedal, Nolandy, Fedovic, Rafole, Murral, Del Nole...the biggest rivalry past decade *Roger-Nadal* and you don't care who's better, who'd win, take the title...because you're Fedal? My arse.

On the other hand this is (this or similar threads) for fun (if I understood correctly) so why not...good threads for off topic subforum.
