Your original list was much better...

The new list, well, cocaine is a hell of a drug.

Litotes is right. You can't average 0.4 with 1.0 again.

And if there were 10 slams in 1958, then each "slam" for that year should only be given a value of : 4/10 = 0.4

You think using year end #1 to derive weeks at #1 is accurate? So had Roddick been playing in the 60s you'd be giving him 52 weeks at #1 right now?

You old system made more sense. Even if you wanted to expand it that doesn't mean you should just make up statistics.

This is...shaky at best. using numbers is not a good idea and even if it were, the weighting is way off

Old list was better

Using number is a very good idea, if only it were accurate (and comparable).

But as I have pointed out several times (and which Groove has ignored), Gonzales' weeks is not only inaccurate but also fictitious.

That's the beauty of numbers. You can give your word that you'll rank some player number 1 if they achieve a certain task that you think is beyond them. Then once they do so, you begrudgingly put them at number 1. However, you follow that up by dropping them down the list even though the accomplishments of the players involved in the reshuffling haven't changed a single bit. Long list, but like they say, quality over quantity. I'd go with a smaller list that is consistent over one that can be changed for no logical reason any day.

Your first list is much better.

-Laver and Federer behind Pancho is unbelievable.
-Nadal behind Connors and McEnroe is unbelievable.
-Borg behind Lendl is unbelievable.
-Murray behind 9485782572 guys is unbelievable.

I like the second list as Mugerer is not number one in that one.

Sorry Djokonauts, I am a fan of Federer now. I've learned over the years to appreciate his contribution to the game. No one will ever surpass this man's influence.

Interesting. You'd rather have Fed 3 and Djokovic 36 than Fed 1 and Djokovic 26. So you admit that you are more anti-Fed than anything else? Me, if I were a Djokovic fan, I'd feel bad not only that my fave was further down but also that the bar he had to climb was set higher. Even equalling Nadal's current merits will now probably not be enough for the top-20, whereas previously it would have sufficed for the top-10.

While I appreciate the effort that has gone into the new list and although it opens up valuable new perspectives, I have to say I much prefer the old list. The difference between them? The new one uses selected numbers to achieve a spurious objectivity, whereas the old one was based on judgment, weighting achievements on a case-by-case basis to take account of the many factors that made them more or less impressive. Gonzales is a perfectly good choice for No. 1, but I don't believe he in any meaningful sense won 20 slams or had 364 weeks at No. 1. You can say he was the best player in the world for longer than anybody else, and that is a big point in his favour, but you can't quantify precisely how many weeks at No. 1 he had in the absence of weekly rankings at the time, & his lengthy domination surely owes something to the fact that during it he played almost exclusively on an extremely fast indoor surface that was tailor-made for his game. How dominant would Nadal have been if 90% of his career had been on clay?

Fed doesn't deserve to be number 1. There are players that have more slams (pro slams) and have been at number one longer.

And where do you believe Djokovic deserve to be? You're happier with 36 than you were with 26?
