Amateur slams should count as amateur slams. Overall, Rosewall has 23 Slams, take away his 4 Amateur slams he then has 19. He won his slams on Clay, wood, Carpet and Grass. Conditions were tougher as there were no medical times out or tie breaks. He, and the other Pros also played doubles.

It is complicated, I would count pro slams as 3/4 of a slam, because players had only 4 matches to win, but on the other hand there were only 3 pro slams (less than the 4 oppurtunities every year players get today) so I think it is alright to count pro slams as full slams taking everything into consideration. However, amateur slams count as slams when the best players are playing in a different tour alltogether.

Good list
I'm wondering, what should Fed do to make no.1 on your list
Which of these would be enough for you?:
- All 4 in one year is obvious (would make it no.1, but it is out of reach)
- Number of GSs (17? 18? More? Specify)
- Beating Nadal at RG
- Leveling/taking lead in H2H against Nadal (probably wont happen)
- Olympic gold in singles (personally, not so important)

Well last year Federer had the chance. Also in 05. and 06. and 07, and 08
If Federer wins RG, beating Nadal en route, he is the GOAT, undisputed. If not, well he needs to get to #1 and win another slam or two, and also hope Nadal doesn't catch up, which he shouldn't. The H2H doesn't matter to me as much. Olympic Gold and Davis Cup would be nice, but beating Nadal en route to an RG title, would make him GOAT undisputed imo.

Fed is the GOAT even if he retires tomorrow.....that is until Johnny comes on tour

If Federer can pull a Connors circa 1982 by winning Wimbledon and USO in 2012 then he would be the undisputed GOAT.

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 tennis players of all time (Djokovic up to #26)
Manageable enough, he can do it
I'm still unsure if I would put Fed above Laver. But another slam or two or beating Nadal at RG would put those doubts away.
But in terms of playstyle and skill level in prime form, I would put Fed above everyone. When put against all players from the list on all surfaces, I'm pretty sure he would be 3:0 against big majority of them (Nadal would probably win a mach on clay, since he is arguably the clay goat).

I doubt I will win 16 slams, I probably won't win my first until age 26 or 27. Unless I play until my late 30's chasing it, which I may do.
If I end up with 6-7 slams and have 2 years or so as World #1, I'll take that. A Becker/Edberg/McEnroe/Wilander type career.

If he wins both, yeah it'd be tough to argue against.

OK, most hypothetical thing ever - where would you place Michael Russell if he randomly went on a bender and won the next 12 slams?

An argument for all time GOAT
12 slams in a row, 3 in 2012, CYGS in 2013 and 2014, and AO 2015
2 CYGS in the Open Era would be tough, Mike Russell would be GOAT

How far is Murray from the list? 2 slams? Another 2 slam finals and 1 slam?

Everyone on the list has at least 2 slams.
If Delpo wins USO this year, he may get on the list.
If Murray wins 1 slam, he'll be even with Chang and Roddick in my spreadsheet.
If Murray wins 2 slams, he'll get on the list for sure, somewhere with Safin, Kafelnikov, Rafter, those guys.
If Roddick wins another slam, he'll also be around Safin/Kafelnikov/Rafter.

6-7 slams? I am too modest. I should aim for 10+

yeh 26/27 is a decent estimate for this, seeing as Russell is CYGS-ing it up for the next few years
