The Dohertys. That's a whole different thing.
Just realized how horrible it would be if Tilden played with Pete Fischer as his coach. Tennis would be dead in 12 months.

Of course you were, but we have to study the history of the game.
Renshaw was overrated and to some extend a mug.

If Renshaw is a mug, Sampras is a super mug

Fred Perry should be bumped up a few places because of his womanising abilities.

If that be the case, Nastase and Safin would be #1 and #2 all time

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 tennis players of all time (Djokovic up to #31)
On a more serious note, even allowing for differences in technology & so on it is highly unlikely Renshaw would be competitive against any great player from Tilden onwards, but he still deserves a place in this list for pioneering the overarm service. No player since has made such a radical & effective innovation in the way the game is played.

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 tennis players of all time (Djokovic up to #31)
Such a great thread. I guess this is almost the official "retro" thread?
I actually believe that a great player would be a great player during any era. Of course the number of GS-titles would be different etc.
Can't let go of Tilden. Don't forget about the ultimate macho man, when talking about womanizers. Would have loved to see him during the 70's. Just imagine the trashtalk Connors and Nastase would have lashed at him during night matches. "You sick perv" etc.
Found some funny and amazing footage on YouTube. "Bill Tilden's advanced tennis" is funny stuff. And you just feel scared for the lad in the film. But then again "Professional tennis at Odsal Stadium" features some incredible footage. That's pure history! Johnny, check it out, if you haven't seen it yet.

Re: Professor Johnny Groove's Top 55 tennis players of all time (Djokovic up to #31)
I think this list is great but only slightly ruined by the inclusion of players who played in the 1800s were it seemed to be so few playing the game that it seemed very easy for one player to go and win a slam for 5-8 times in a row. I doubt these even could be called good athletes and probably played with those silly outfits and hats, as was the tradition at the time they probably would not sweat in matches or put an effort as it would not look good for a noble man to do so and only the elite was allowed to compete at all in tennis. Even practising was seen as bad sportmanship, I think all tennis players before the game became big with the masses with Bill Tilden, Fred Perry and the french musqueteers should simply be ignored.
List just doesnt look good with Renshaw, Wilding, Doherty and Larned ahead of Edberg and Becker. I belive Kramer completely ignored these players aswell in his list of greats.

Has Djokovic overtaken Guillermo Vilas in accomplishments?
What do you think?
They both won 4 slams, but unlike Djokovic, Vilas never won Wimbledon. Also, Vilas was never No. 1
