Good effort by JP against Delic.
That loss ends a poor week by all the Aussies in Challenger tournaments this week, with not one Aussie getting past the first round. Lack of experience on Indoor Hard courts no doubt.

When JP was back at the University of Tennessee this week for the Challenger, he got honored on the football field for being the athlete of the year.

Here's the report from Tennessee's site with video and photos: http://www.utsports.com/blog/2011/11...-the-year.html

Quote:
John-Patrick Smith was honored as 2011 SEC Athlete of the Year during the first quarter Vols' 24-0 victory over MTSU at Neyland Stadium on Saturday night.

Smith finished his time at Tennessee as one of the most successful players to ever step onto the college tennis courts. He became just the second player in the history of the sport to earn All-America honors in singles and doubles all four years of his career. He was also named SEC Player of the Year as a junior and senior, helping lead the Vols to back-to-back conference titles for the first time.

Smith is just the fourth Vol to be selected SEC Male Athlete of the Year and the first since quarterback Peyton Manning in 1998. Baseball star Todd Helton won the award in 1995, and wide receiver Larry Seivers took the honor in 1977.

Jippers certainly made quite a name for himself on the college circuit, it's a good road to travel down development wise and here's hoping he can make the transition onto the pro tour. He's already had some excellent results and pushing Delic at this stage of his career is a positive sign for the future.

J.P through to the QF's with a 6-4 6-4 win. This will do great for his ranking.

Well done Jipper. Catching up with your mates in the rankings. Polansky will be a good test to see where JP's game is at the moment.

They met twice over the last few weeks in America. Polansky won this first set one in 3 tight sets in a final of a futures tournment. Then the next week Jipper beat him 6-4 6-4. And went on to win the tournment. Would be great to see him in a semi of a challenger event.

I like the way his name is written out John-Patrick because the name John Smith is so common. I have to confess I have never heard of him because I don't follow College Tennis.

Still some work to do for Jipper to be competitive regularly at Challenger Level but he will get there. Polansky is a good player, coming off an injury just lately.
