Welcome to the Men's Forum Jipper.
What a champion, carved up Kelly in his 1st match, after qualies that is.
In qualifying did not drop a set, conceding only 13 games in 8 sets...

From Townsville, Queensland, tennis has been this banana-bender's game since he was in primary school. JP represented Australia as a Junior at age 12 and was a Junior National Champion at some times over the years. I recall him playing against Nishikori, both aged 13, in the 14&U Nationals in Brisbane. Can't recall the result but JP gave Kei a good match.
He reached a high of 6 in the ITF World Junior's. A tall but slightly built guy, JP found it hard going against the big hitters of his age group such as Lindner, Nicholls, Jones and Klein in the latter part of the Juniors, and elected to go to College in the USA, Tennessee I think, where he has carved out a name for himself. At Tennessee he was the MVP (?) player for 4 years in a row, a USA Collegiate record and has, at various times over the four years, been the No. 1 ranked singles and doubles player, only the 2nd player to be ranked No.1 in both at the same time.
A crafty and intelligent player, JP will trouble many on the Men's circuit. I will follow his progress keenly.
Good luck Jipper.

Jipper advances after dropping a set! Coming back to win the next two sets easily, winning 36 60 61.
On current form should win the next match against No.8 seed Ty Trombetta.

But he didn't get past the 6 seed USA's Austin Krajicek, losing 75 62, in the round of 16.
Think Jipper needs more matches at the Pro level.

Into the final in the doubles.

Yeah he's had some pretty erratic performances. He will be winning these matches soon.

Great accomplishment, for those who don't know who Cam Newton is, beating him for this award is very good.

Quoted from the article link:

"Cam Newton is no Rafael Nadal.

But then, is John-Patrick Smith?

The SEC apparently holds Smith -- Tennessee's first four-time tennis All-American who finished the Vols' season ranked 10th in the nation -- in higher regard than the NFL's top draft pick, as the conference's athletic directors have made Smith the first Volunteer to win their male-athlete-of-the-year award since Peyton Manning in 1998.

Newton, meanwhile, will have to be content with the Heisman Trophy -- and a BCS national championship.

"The SEC is very proud to honor John-Patrick and Kayla, as they are outstanding examples of what a student-athlete can accomplish, both on and off the field of competition," SEC commissioner Mike Slive said in a news release this week of Smith and Kayla Hoffman, an Alabama gymnast. "Their hard work and dedication to excellence have made them fine representatives of their universities and this conference. We congratulate them and wish them the best in their future endeavors."

Vols tennis standout John-Patrick Smith trumped Heisman winner Cam Newton and hauled away the SEC's top individual prize, winning male athlete of the year award.
For his part, Australian native Smith was only the second player to be named All-American in singles and doubles every year of his career, repeating the feat of Southern California's Rick Leach (1984-87)."

Congratulations JP

J.P. is playing in another 10K Futures event in the USA. He beat J. Zavala in the first round 6-2 6-1, and now takes on unranked qualifier Z. Nguyen, who beat the 7th seed in straight sets..
