Absolutely - but I'm not convinced it will be pretty.

Both Milos vs. Tipsy & Vasek/Daniel dubs are obviously our best shots there so it will (hopefully) come down to last rubber. I'm going with Vasek in #5 (hoping that with Marty coaching in between change-overs & Canadian team giving him huge moral support will help him with the nerves) .. and also insisting that he not play a no-win situation against Djoker on day#1 and wear himself out. Thoughts?
I totally agree that Vasek vs Nole on day 1 is no good. But, if Frank somehow beat Nole (and Milos beat Janko) and then we lose the doubles and Milos loses to Novak, would you put Vasek vs Tipsy in #5... or would you call on Frank? If Frank beat Nole on Friday, he might be in great form -- or it might be that he can't have two great matches in a row.

Well, it probably wouldn't happen.

Who will be more decent on clay? Vasek or Frank?

Djokovic won't be back to Belgrade on Wednesday the earliest. He has a fundraising dinner in NYC on Tuesday night. So he will only have a day of practice on the indoor clay court and adapting to the new surface. So Friday is likely the only chance to beat him. Still, the chance is low.

Knowing frank he would probably beat novak in straight sets then lose to janko in straights

Also did anyone read tom tebbutts blog today where nestor says there is a possibility novak doesnt play friday and that is why they called up a 3rd singles specialist instead of zimonjic's regular davis cup doubles partner

Tebbutt was on Sportsnet talking about that possibility.

Fundraising dinner for Nole's foundation Tuesday night. Let's say the earliest he leaves NYC is around midnight Tuesday/Wednesday. That's already 8am Wednesday morning Belgrade time. A direct flight must be at least 10 hours. The earliest he would arrive is mid-late afternoon Wednesday with just enough time to see the court before the official dinner/photos they always seem to do.

I'm dancing a rain dance for a postponement of a Monday Novak/Rafa final that goes five when they play Tuesday. Why not? Everything else has gone our way this year. Home ties, Spain sending a flotilla instead of an armada why not a little weather messing with a tie played indoors.

So if it's the number 3 player for Serbia on Friday, do you play Frank or Vasek then?

Here's another (maybe crazy) idea: If we know for sure that Serbia #3 is playing Friday, why not slot Milos in @#2. ie.
day 1: Frank or (Vasek) vs. Tipsy / Milos vs. Serbia #3
day 2: dubs
day 3: (Frank) or Vasek vs. Djoker / Milos vs. Tipsy
.
Basically the only real difference here is that the key #5 rubber (Vasek vs. Tipsy) gets moved to rubber #1 (and now Vasek doesn't have the pressure .. he knows we have 3 other winnable rubbers coming up) and the key rubber #5, we have Milos vs. Tipsy rather than Vasek ... I know this is kind of unconventional (maybe even gamesmanship?), but objectively if winning the SF is our #1 priority, we'd have to win 3 out of 4 matches now & this gives us our best shot (ie. why waste Milos against Djoker's only appearance?).

My god, this is so crazy it just might work!

Only problem is if serbia puts novak back in an hour before the match, would we be able to sub frank in for milos but sill play milos against the #2 on friday? Im under the impression once a player is subbed out he cant be moved back in?

Wouldn't it still be better to have Milos play Djokovic on Friday instead of Sunday anyways? So I don't see the downside to trying this move.

this is true, im just worried the milos vs serbia #2 is the 5th rubber which could be a dead rubber after novak already won 2 of his matches and we we lose doubles or another singles. id rather have milos play the weaker serbian opponent on day 1 so we are close to guaranteed a live 5th rubber

I say we play to win, not to keep it close. If it is 2-2 and the 5th rubber is Vasek/Frank vs Djokovic, have we really kept the tie alive (I would suggest that we have not).

we can't do that though. You nominate your 2 singles players and the higher ranked on plays the lower ranked opponent on Friday, and plays first Sunday. The only way around this is if your player is legimately hurt and he cannot play the remainder of the tie someone can sub in for the Friday.

The only circumstance where Milos gets to play the final rubber is if he subs in for an injured player, and I'm fairly sure we're going to nominate Milos to play and not be a sub for a fake injury we won't get away with.

If for whatever reason Nole doesn't play(I think he will, he played injured last year(?) because he figured him injured was better than Troicki, I think him tired is better than Lajovic) then it should be Milos/Lajovic, Vasek/Tipsy on day 1, and Milos/Tipsy, Vasek/Nole on day 3(in that order Sunday)

also if there was some theoretical way we could sub Milos in as our #2 the day 1 matches wouldn't look like that. It'd be our 1(Vasek) v. Their 2(Lajovic) and our 2(Milos) v. their 1(Tipsy), and then Nole would sub in for Lajovic on the final day and play Milos not Vasek

Of course not, no one actually thinks we will.
