Default Top 4 seeds in the SF of a grand slam

Now the four semifinalists of the French Open are known, and they are no other than the top 4 seeds: Nadal, Djokovic, Federer and Murray.

The same quartet was also in the semifinals of the world tour finals last november, though Murray was only seeded 5th in the tournament.

Despite having had (very) consistent players at the top of the rankings for years, this hasn't actually happened for exactly 5 years in a Grand Slam. Last time was French Open 2006:

Code:
Semifinals
(1)Roger Federer (SUI) d. (3)David Nalbandian (ARG) 3-6 6-4 5-2 ret.
(2)Rafael Nadal (ESP) d. (4)Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) 6-4 6-2 7-6(7)
There have been numerous times since then when three of the top seeds met in the semifinals, namely:

- French Open 2007: (1)Federer, (2)Nadal, (4)Davydenko and (6)Djokovic

- Wimbledon 2007: (1)Federer, (2)Nadal, (4)Djokovic and (12)Gasquet

- US Open 2007: (1)Federer, (3)Djokovic, (4)Davydenko and (15)Ferrer

- Australian Open 2008: (1)Federer, (2)Nadal, (3)Djokovic and unseeded Tsonga

- French Open 2008: (1)Federer, (2)Nadal, (3)Djokovic and unseeded Monfils

- US Open 2008: (1)Nadal, (2)Federer, (3)Djokovic and (6)Murray

- US Open 2009: (1)Federer, (3)Nadal, (4)Djokovic and (6)Del Potro

- Wimbledon 2010: (2)Nadal, (3)Djokovic, (4) Murray and (12)Berdych

- US Open 2010: (1)Nadal, (2)Federer, (3)Djokovic and (12)Youzhny

and then French Open 2011.

In Paris it happens for the 4th time (1984, 85, 06) in the Open era.

It's not necessarily the hallmark of a weak era but it speaks volumes about the consistency of these players to come through to the final stages of the tournaments.

Interestingly the Fedal rivalry has meant that in a good number of these occasions, the top 2 seeds have gone on to face each other in the final. Now with the Rafole rivaly becoming more pronounced, I think there is a good chance the top 2 seeds will again make it to the final.

By 25 stupid points due to an easy win in Brisbane. Murray was still fourth-best then anyway and if I recall correctly they were together in the same quarter.

I have collated this data in a thread in the stats forum
