Interesting article, I think it answers many question raised here

Quote:
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias which can manifest in one of two ways:

Unskilled individuals suffer from illusory superiority, mistakenly rating their ability much higher than is accurate. This bias is attributed to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their ineptitude.

If you’re incompetent, you can’t know you’re incompetent. […] the skills you need to produce a right answer are exactly the skills you need to recognize what a right answer is.

It is all experience man. I know too many players who play one tournament, lose, and then that's it. I love this game too much to just give in. Losing sucks, but not playing sucks even more.

It ain't about how hard you can hit, it is about how hard you can get hit and keep on swinging. Success is defined by the ability to move from defeat to defeat without losing eagerness.

Colonel Sanders had his fried chicken recipe denied over 1,000 times before he finally broke through and look where KFC is now. I have yet to eat 1,000 bagels.

Well I disagree with Yeats. Why all the psychoanalysis? Maybe I'm just a guy who doesn't want to give up despite all logical evidence to the contrary? Is that so difficult to imagine in these times of shortcuts and easy ways out?

But of course, everyone is a critic:

Well, if one gets regularly destroyed in the earliest stage of tournaments, the common sense would suggest one needs to train more and prepare better and/or smarter before going back. However, your answer seems to be "play even more tournaments and then some". There is that saying about doing same things and expecting different results. But I guess you are gonna see what's going on

Dude, every day i try something new, something a little different. I know that insanity is doing the same over and over and expecting different results, which is why I always do something different.

Trying to find different sparring partners, different gym routines, trying to change my work schedule, quitting work entirely, getting back into work, changing racquets, hell, i changed from 2 to 1 hand on the BH a few years ago

I am constantly trying to find solutions, man.

a different practice partner or gym routine won't do it. what Time Violation is suggesting is more or less take a break from competing and TRULY train day in and day out on all of your game, foundations, whatever, maybe see if you can volunteer at a local club to help out for free and get short few minutes lessons from someone much more qualified, suck up to people you have met who are infinitely more talented and might be able to spare a little time to impart knowledge on you of what to work on

you are the pure definition of the type of person who wants immediate results and excitement and fun without truly putting in the hard yards. going out for a few hours to practice a stroke or serve isn't good enough, if you want it and truly are working for it you're putting everything into it

I bring it up from time to time as an example, but Ivo Karlovic is a great one. he didn't have the means to gets tons of training and help when younger so would go out in the dark of night to an empty tennis court and hit serves for hours and hours

granted he did have height to help him a bit but look where he is now- trust me he wouldn't be where he is without putting that sort of insane dedication. he is an example that you don't need to be sent to some academy as a child or be born into a wealthy family to succeed in the sport. it's all about mindset and effort

you are an actor, an entertainer, not a tennis player

Well, obviously you're doing it wrong. For example, if you are constantly getting injured (back, knee, etc.) after playing 1 hour or less of not very competitive tennis, then something is very wrong with your gym routines and/or your conditioning in general. Invest that money you're blowing on tournaments into a half-decent fitness coach and you should see some results at least, it's ridiculous that you can't get at least a few games off 14 or 15 yr olds and geezers through pure grinding.
