Dance of the Furies: Europe and the Outbreak of World War I by Michael Neiberg. From the product description:

"The common explanation for the outbreak of World War I depicts Europe as a minefield of nationalism, needing only the slightest pressure to set off an explosion of passion that would rip the continent apart. But in a crucial reexamination of the outbreak of violence, Michael Neiberg shows that ordinary Europeans, unlike their political and military leaders, neither wanted nor expected war during the fateful summer of 1914. [my bold-Merton] By training his eye on the ways that people outside the halls of power reacted to the rapid onset and escalation of the fighting, Neiberg dispels the notion that Europeans were rabid nationalists intent on mass slaughter. He reveals instead a complex set of allegiances that cut across national boundaries.

Neiberg marshals letters, diaries, and memoirs of ordinary citizens across Europe to show that the onset of war was experienced as a sudden, unexpected event. As they watched a minor diplomatic crisis erupt into a continental bloodbath, they expressed shock, revulsion, and fear. But when bargains between belligerent governments began to crumble under the weight of conflict, public disillusionment soon followed. Yet it was only after the fighting acquired its own horrible momentum that national hatreds emerged under the pressure of mutually escalating threats, wartime atrocities, and intense government propaganda. [my bold]

Dance of the Furies gives voice to a generation who found themselves compelled to participate in a ghastly, protracted orgy of violence they never imagined would come to pass."
That does sound interesting. I will look for it. If he's saying nationalism was nascent at the beginning of the war and was really the result of the war, I'm not so sure about it. Wasn't Duke Ferdinand killed by a young Bosnian nationalist? I think usually common people aren't wanting war and tend not to believe it will come to that. But, I need to see what his arguments are. History always takes these turns of theories.

Fed doesn't have that problem it's Gasquet who likes play 25m behind the baseline.

That sounds too much, 255 billion euros? There is a lot of tax evasion from professionals running small, independent businesses like for example real estate developers, doctors, lawyers. But people living on salaries and corproations cannot evade. It is complex because small professionals carry political clout, so tax evasion is associated with corruption and inefficiencies in the taxing agency. Actually IMF carries a lot of experience in this topic but so far we have not seen much improvement here

Totally true, Norway and Switzerland contribute to EU funds despite not being members of the EU.

A lot of things are being said about Greece that are not true on this subject. Not to mention the dozens of millions of euros (or more perhaps) that have been put on bets that Greece will go bankrupt. Seems a lot of people want to see that happen.

The rich finding ways to avoid paying taxes is nothing new. The rich will always have it easy, crisis or no crisis. In any case the situation is really bad for the rest of us. Salaries and pensions being slashed, unemployment rate going up etc...
Sadly it is worse than simple bets. The "sovereign debt insurance" product, initially served a function as insurance: Imagine, say, that the pension fund of Belgium teachers has invested in bonds issued by Greece to augment the pension returns. A perfectly legit motivation that they buy insurance for these assets because if Greece defaults, the retirees will see a cut in their benefits. The problem is that there are "naked" claims around, that is speculators holding the insurance without holding Greek debt. That creates disturbing incentives, similarly to owning fire insurance on your (potentially unpleasant) neighbor's house

I cannot understand how media can choose to go on strike when there will certainly be newsworthy facts on the day.

I loved this description from a book I'm listening to while cooking.

"We met in one of the barracks of the famous camp which comprised a patrol way and observation towers with armed sentries and guard dogs with restless characters."

"Guard dogs with restless characters" What a great description.
