Rochus, one is a doctor and the other a dentist.

It's actually terrible what some parents put their kids through. Hanging the prosperity of the family in the balance on the beliefs that your kid will become the greatest ever athlete. This seems amazingly prevalent in Eastern Europe. Disgusting behavior if you ask me. I don't even want to imagine the stats of all the failed prospects.

^Kinda agree. Let's face it, the Djokovic family took a massive risk with Novak; thank god for them it paid off. I bet there are many families who did similar things, for whom the risk didn't quite work as well, and are now in shit.

Maybe it's at the will of their son's. So they let them accomplish their dreams, rightfully so...

I don't want a sport with only players from USA, Germany, France...

Hm... not necessarily. I don't know about other countries, but in here when Djokovic, Ivanovic and others were just starting to play tennis it wasn't exactly a popular or well known sport, on the contrary, quite an exotic one. So, if someone was really that hell bent on "prosperity", he would've probably chosen football or basketball as the much safer choice

Hum, speak for yourself. 80-s and early 90-s were good for Yugoslavian tennis and we've watched almost every Zivojinovic, later Ivanisevic, Prpic, Oresar matches...It was not that popular but surely not exotic one. Far from that and we had a chance to watch big matches. Of course, I'm speaking about Yugoslavia (SFRJ).

OT - I agree with Garson's post.

that is not true, him and Coria enjoyed the golden period in the AAT (tennis association of Argentina) and got sponsored most of his way to the top

he is from middle class from a small town in the heart of Cordoba and he trained on a hardcourt built by his grandfather...

Ok, maybe not exotic, but not nearly on the par with football and such And I don't think many had the idea "let's play tennis to get rich", today perhaps, but not then.

The latest data I could find was from 2007 stating Ainars Gulbis is woth 14mil Lats, which is about 28mil dollars. One thing is clear - he is far from being in top3 of richest men in Latvia (is still in top100 though) and he is by no means billionaire, in fact even the richest man in Latvia is not billionaire.
Gulbis granddad was known basketball player but it was in USSR and noone was rich then. His other granddad was actor and so is his mom, but this is not hollywood, actors are not paid very well in Latvia.
What I want to say is - Gulbis family is rich by Latvian standart but not Richie Rich rich
