Agree with you. His win vs Rhyne in Knoxville last fall was far from an easy one and no need to mention how dangerous Golubev can be.

2-1*, 33% (6/18) first serves in.

I really don't like the profile pic.

As expected - Vasek suffering big time. Needs an early break - tons of these young US players get really pumped at these qualies and can play out of their mind

Very disappointing result for Vasek

Americans always seem to give good performances in New York, but this is still a guy I think he should be beating.

This has got to be a really tough loss for him. Three spots from the MD, now losing in the opening round of qualifying in straights and you can't say he was terribly unlucky with the draw.

42% first serves in, 7DFs, 21% receiving pts won, 19W/36UE - Just poor stats in general.

Maybe Vasek isn't cut out to get any higher (in singles). Still, the only way to find out is to try something new - Fred's a great tennis guy, and a definite asset to Tennis Canada, but he needs to be replaced as Vasek's coach.

I don't know whether Vasek would benefit from a change of coach, but I completely disagree that that is the only change possible or must necessarily be the solution.

Personally, the problem I see is with his scheduling. I had a bad feeling when I saw he was attempting to qualify for the clay Masters after having a weak start to the year. Given that clay is not his surface, it was no surprise that he did poorly. And then grass is a new surface. The result is that he arrives at the US Open with his confidence not the highest, his serve unreliable and under huge pressure to defend the large number of points he won in the fall last year.

So I am not particularly surprised that he lost today.

At this point I am looking towards next year to see if he can regroup and come back stronger.

I didn't say it was the only possible change or necessarily the solution, but it is one that can be done. Even a lot of the decision making with scheduling has to be on Fred, as is that his serve is worse that it was a year ago (whether this is a matter of confidence or mechanics, or a combination). Given that they have been together for what a year and a half now, where Vasek hasn't really improved at all in a year, why not try someone else? I don't think it would get any worse that it is now, and become irreparable damage, but I suppose it could be possible.

not really sure what to say. He's barely won a match this year. yes he won a couple challengers but those were rediculously weak, we saw how he did in the stronger ones

i am not sure what the reasoning is for his year. maybe the pressure of expectation, maybe he needs a new coach

For everyone writing off Vasek look at how Rhyne Williams is dominating Golubev for some perspective.

These US Open qualies are always a crapshoot and guys get hot, particularly young American guys. Like McEnroe said qualifying for a GS is one of the hardest things in tennis.

I don't understand what everyone was happy with his draw for. I saw it and thought crap he got Rhyne Williams. Some of that may have to do with the fact that I like Williams too but he's a pretty good player, playing at home, I didn't like that draw, and I think Rhyne will qualify now. I'm not at all shocked that he lost.

He has moved backwards this year, but I wouldn't label this loss as one of his worse, it was a 60/40 match in favour of Vasek at best imo

well i dont know much about williams so i wasnt even sure of how he would do against him. Given the fact that vasek has only won like 15 matches all year in qualifying and main draw appearances combined outside of challengers though i wasnt to confident about his chances of qualifying anyway. If he got past williams i had him going down to golubev

For sure Vasek is struggling with his serve. I don't know how much that is the source of his overall problems, but if you can't get your serve in, it certainly makes the rest of your game more difficult. But there is no reason to the think the problem with the serve is terminal - he'll try different things and eventually it will work itself out.

And in the meantime learning to deal with losing is also a key part of learning to be a professional tennis player. Federer said something on these lines recently in an interview - that as an up-and-coming player it can be useful in fact not to go straight up the rankings, because in the longer term you need to figure out how to work through times when winning doesn't come easily.

I suggest we check back in a year and see how things have worked out.
