Tie 2: Clerc d. Tanner 7-5, 6-3, 8-6

Tie 4: McEnroe d. Clerc 7-5 5-7 6-3 3-6 6-3

This must have been one hell of a final. I remember that last year Clerc -now ESPN commentator for LA- said that McEnroe was the one player he seriously couldn't stand. For the record, McEnroe and the USA team had their revenge against Vilas and Clerc after losing in Buenos Aires the year before http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6CIttvDOA8

2006: vs. Russia (local) - Surface: carpet indoors

TIRIAC/NASTASE was the best DC team in the history of tennis

Romania (basically Nasty and Tiriac in all the ties) in Davis Cup:

Three finals, all vs. the States:

1969, Cleveland: US – Romania, 5-0
1971, Charlotte: US – România, 3-2
1972, Bucharest: Romania – US, 2-3

Nothing more painful in the history of tennis than those latter 2 finals...

1969:
Arthur Ashe - Ilie Năstase 6-2 15-13 7-5
Stan Smith - Ion Ţiriac 6-8 6-3 5-7 6-4 6-4
Bob Lutz / Stan Smith - Ilie Năstase / Ion Ţiriac 8-6 6-1 11-9
Stan Smith - Ilie Năstase 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-1 11-9
Arthur Ashe - Ion Ţiriac 6-3 8-6 3-6 4-0 ret.

1971: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1971_Davis_Cup#Final
1972: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_Davis_Cup#Final

Just for the tards nowadays, here's what a Davis Cup team statistics should look like in order to make the fans gloat (Romanian tennis statistics):

Most total wins: Ilie Năstase (109–37)
Most singles wins: Ilie Năstase (74–22)
Most doubles wins: Ilie Năstase (35–15)
Best doubles team: Ilie Năstase and Ion Ţiriac (27–7)
Most ties played: Ilie Năstase (52)
Most years played: Ilie Năstase (18)

Q. Do you think you would have been able to play as well as you played today, or you think you would have pulled out from the game if it wasn't the Masters Cup final?

ROGER FEDERER: No, Roger Federer doesn't pull out. Otherwise he doesn't walk on court (smiling).

After losing to Nalbandian in 2005 TMC final...

Great thread. You went pretty deep as well. Not sure which one's the most painful, Rios losing at a home event several times. Or Roddick finally pushing Fed to 5 sets and seconds close from a grand slam title but blows it!
