I know it's early days, but you can look at the best 10 players on the year right now and you'll see where Gasquet comes up short.

Djokovic, Federer and Murray - great performers on the biggest stages.

Ferrer - cashes in big time on the clay, and proved at the Australian Open why he cannot be underestimated on other surfaces either.

Soderling, Almagro and Roddick - consistently strong on their favoured surfaces, and generally tough to beat on the biggest stages (Soderling especially).

Wawrinka and Berdych - mix isolated stand-out performances with other decent results.

Raonic - new in town, but R4 effort at the Australian Open generally matches Gasquet's best showings at Slams, and already two strong results in optionals.

Gasquet...nothing spectacular in Slams or Masters (R3-4 and R2-3 are generally his limit), not capable of really challenging for a '500' title, and lacks the consistency even to clean up at '250' level (Chennai 2011 a prime example). Based on that, he would find it tough to maintain even a top 20 ranking.

If you look at someone like Querrey (from 2010), he didn't do much in the big events but cleaning up in the '250s' earned him a weak top 20 ranking.

Answer : Big NO
Almagro is useless on any surface other than clay.
I doubt Almagro would beat Richard on either grass or hard.

Not really true. He has gone at least as far as R3 in each of the other Slams (perilously close to reaching QF at AO 2010), and appeared in R4 at IW and QF in Miami.

He is one of those players that I think ought to do better off the clay, and I suggest that part of his problem was a poor attitude in previous years.

well top 10 maybe a distant dream, but i think top 15 is clearly attainable in the near future. Among the 10: only the 10 and 9 ranking spots are still open to me and you need to be conistent for at least 4 months to achieve that. A MS semi-final and a '500' final could make it.
Ritchie has reached 2 MS finals on 2 different surfaces, unfortunately it was 2005-2007 Federer on the other side of the court

So when you get a player of Platini's skill realising his potential, then you get history in the making.
Platini himself says that the year when he played best was his final year in France in Saint-Etienne, before joining Italy and Juventus

Then well he didn't need to join what you call the "winners" ... that means not French as I understand well to fulfill his potential

Luckily for France, Amelie Mauresmo bucked the trend as she was going the same way until she won those two slams plus the year end championships between 2005 and 2006.
Leconte was a great talent (technically better than Gasquet) but with a bad physique, and already in that time you couldn't do anything without a good physique, ask Nalbandian

The other ones were not great talents, and Tsonga has been hampered by injuries since very early in his youth.

I've always thought that Gasquet's best opportunity is in Wimbledon, whatever the ranking.

Grass is so much suited to his game and not many players are so much adapted to grass nowadays.

Then I always look forward to something in Wimbledon one day.

As for the ranking, if he makes something good (at least a semifinal) in Wimbledon one day it will give him the confidence to be in the top-10 back as he was in 2007.

When ? I don't know.

In short yes,I think he could make it to top 10 again.Taking the ball a bit earlier and standing closer to the baseline would help though,no need to play like some claycourt specialist all the time.

No, he's not good enough. I believe in a Top 20 though, and this is coming from a fan.

I'm with you on this one. He has unbelievable talent and should have been top-10 for far longer than he was.

I would like to see him back in top-10 but he needs to show his balls more often and for longer - doesn't sound right does it?

he can show the balls on one match if he can hang on long enough, but during an entire week it's different because he doesn't show the same motivation on each match. against Dimitrov, for example, it didn't seemed to be really concerned about what was going on. Now we know he was playing on painkillers (for his shoulder) and was not thinking about going deeper in the draw. But in QF against Gilles, he was clearly in the match and wanted the win at all costs.

If the grass season was longer,i'd say yes.
He missed the last 2 Wimbledons so it will be interesting to see how he'll do in his favourite surface this year.
