Although if I'd been there I think I'd have been one of those people that keeps bursting into uncontrollable giggling after the incident and they'd probably eject me

Pretty much

I was there, and I was watching and I still can't answer how Dinara got to number one, watching her now.

Ha. Safina didn't get close enough to get a kiss and hug from Kim at the end of that one, she shook hands practically from the service line

All joking aside, it's a sad thing. She worked so hard to get to the top, and she just hasn't been able to do anything since her injury. I feel badly for her. I think she's a sweet girl. Plus, I remember her as just a 16 year old sitting on the grass crying while her mother lectured her. I thought then what a long road she had ahead.

As an introduction to classical music, I always think that the Russians are a good entry point. Rachmaninov or Tchaikovsky. 2nd piano concerto for Rachmaninov and 1st piano concerto. Both are quite emotional, but musically accessible. I absolutely adore that Elgar Cello concerto Metis posted though. That just carries me away.
I rather listen to what you like, so we have a common basis then starting with some things that are typically suggested.
one should just listen to good music and the rest follows I know the Rachmaninov concerto. I don't think I want something that is easy accessible. I (like to) think of myself as somebody that can appreciate complex things

This is my fav so far although I know it is overplayed and Beethoven did not think it was his best:

almost as funny being a tennis fan and finding Nadal a boring moonballer. Anyway, she used the past tense. I'm at her stage concerning Mozart now

It is a sad thing, really - she's not got a game I like much, it's very artificially constructed, not much feel there, but watching her struggle through a complete lack of confidence and the fact that you can see it all so clearly on her face and in her eyes how much it all hurts her, it's hard to see - watching her at times last year and at the end of 09 was horrible, seeing how fraught and how almost hysterical the whole situation was making her.

I haven't seen her that much, but Safina never seemed to really love the sport all that much. Many like to mock WTA but I still think it's crucial to be passionate about the sport in order to stay at a top level.

I love those pieces. They are lush and gorgeous. A famous Russian pianist once said that if you did not love Russian music, you had no heart.

It's nice that you like the piano. I love Beethoven's lesser known piano pieces too. Even though he's known for his symphonies and they are awesome, it's his smaller works that endear him to me.

Same here. I did everything Metis wrote only I found that the baking time was insufficient so I kept baking it more and more. And then I stopped because I thought it was becoming hard. The insides felt uncooked-the outside portions were really hard

I missed the classic I am too old to change my sleep patterns

I remember the year my brother visited me at IW we were watching from the first row Safina run back and forth and back and forth on the baseline. Her face was completely red and she was gasping for breath, but still running running. My brother just looked at me like "is this really happening?"

I think she worked very hard indeed, Even though as you say her game was not particularly appealing, she did quite a bit with what she had. I wonder what it would have been if her brother had worked so hard.

Lots of baggage for Dinara to carry with her too. More than most girls have, I think. Anyway, I've always had a soft spot for her.
