Weintraub should ask Joe Sirianni about getting into Serie A, but the league tennis is good tennis. Lots of the South Americans play it as well definitely helps with expenses.

Today Amir reached the final of Fergana challenger in Uzbekistan. A very weak field, but he used his opportunity. In the final he will face Yuki Bhambri, the 2009 Australian Open Junior champion who reached his first challenger final this week. No matter if Amir wins or loses (it would be his first challenger title!), he will achieve a new career high ranking next week

Very weak challenger but smart move for him. Hope he wins the title.

Hehe I have to admit finding this thread in an international forum was quite a surprise. Great job translating the blogs Or.

As for Amir, I was always surprised he never did better since he does so well in Davis Cup. The Israeli crowd makes the difference I assume (with me among them haven't missed a match in a long time).

Yeah he's smart, he always plays those Asian Challengers He has also already reached his best ranking, since he's now #161 and by winning this Challenger he will enter the top-150 for the first time.

I'm also happy for Bhambri, nice week for him, it's his first Challenger final too of course.

hm, I wasn't even aware these leagues even existed. very interesting. It makes sense for lower ranked players I guess. You need to make money, you need to pay your bills, no matter what your profession is. I don't know any more. I think that the ATP need to change something when it comes to prize money, but we talked about this so many times...

I've seen Tipsarevic among the names who played yesterday in the german league.

that's strange tho. Tipsy has made almost 6 millions in prize money if I can remember correctly (not sure what extra $15000 or so can really do for him, strange) ... well, maybe it's good for tennis fans to be able to see him at these tournaments ... although, if he really plays these kind of tournaments maybe he is earning some cheap money screwing up many lower ranked players who need that money much more than Janko. Not sure I like that.

I knew of the Bundesliga but I really didn't know much about top level league tennis. I'm not surprised that top 100 players decide to play league and I could see it being very appealing to some players -

Imagine being on the tour for a number of years, you're feeling a bit jaded from the ranking points chase and the travel. You have a chance to base yourself somewhere for 5-6 weeks in the case of the French league (which is great if it's a location that you like/love and have a good relationship with those around you there), practice plenty, do plenty of physical/gym work, play every Saturday and have guaranteed income for that time. Ideal if the circumstances suit, whether you're ranked outside the top 100 or near the very top. Then you can go back to the tour with a lot of training under the belt and with a bit of money in the pocket.
