Milos foolishly dumped his serve when serving for the match, but prevailed in the Tiebreaker. On to round 2 and a rematch with Fish.

I read on Twitter that Milos would be playing doubles with Feliciano Lopez.. any truth to this?

Yeah, Soderling has illness, so he withdrew from doubles and Feli/Milos got in.

Thanks for the update weird doubles pair.. wonder why Feli isn't playing with Verdasco? but oh well.. I'm sure they'll have fun playing together!

btw Milos spoke a bit about Canadian tennis after the win today:

"I noticed when I was walking off the court that there were a lot of Canadians in the crowd," the 20-year-old rising star from Thornhill, Ont., said Friday after a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) first-round win over Turkey's Marsel Ilhan at the BNP Parisbas Open. "I heard people saying 'I'm Canadian. I'm here. I came down to watch you.' It means a lot."

"I'm doing what I want to be doing, starting to be an ambassador for tennis in Canada and to help the sport grow. If people are coming down here for me, for Dan (Nestor), for the rest of the players, for Rebecca (Marino) , it means a lot. It means that tennis development and tennis growth is going in the right way in Canada."

Raonic said he wants to help that growth so more kids turn to tennis.

"Even further down the road, the goal would be all those tremendous talents and athletes you have going into hockey, if they could see really a successful road towards tennis in Canada, they might come this way. There really are some spectacular Canadian athletes, like Crosby, for example, Gretzky."

Spoken like a true Montenegrin He sure talks a lot about Canadian tennis to be a true Montenegrin, doesn't he?

I'm already fearing the US Open in September when Milos' first match will be full of wannabe Canadian tennis fans and I'll be stuck 20 feet from the court. Much preferred watching him last year virtually by myself

Some reflections on Raonic's match from Tignor:

http://blogs.tennis.com/thewrap/2011...hog-alike.html

and Tebbutt:

http://www.lovemeansnothing.ca/blog/...m-indian-wells

Tebbutt's piece includes a long comment from Raonic on his hopes for Canadian tennis.

That's interesting from Tignor, but one wonders how he could observe both matches at the same time since they were played simultaneously. From reading the piece, I don't think he was at Raonic's match -- at least not more than momentarily.

It was interesting to read what Raonic said about not cranking his first serve. What we saw were mainly serves in the 130 range. Raonic's forehand was working some magic. But, he did boom one at 148. It came out of nowhere, and didn't even seem that fast, but then 148 popped up on the board and the crowd ooohhhhhhhed.

He made a rookie mistake in the second. He was cruising to the win and only had to break Ilhan again. Ilhan stiffened. He's a competitor too. Raonic lost focus. That's the only thing that can account for that sloppy game. So, someone once said that everyone loses focus somewhere during a match. It's not possible to concentrate 100%. The great ones get focus back after maybe a point or two, and that's the difference -- how quickly do you regain concentration? Raonic, unfortunately, did not regain concentration quickly enough. Ilhan had gotten some confidence back by holding and Raonic had mentally already won the match and had let up. So he got broken. Hope he learned a lesson.

I left before the tiebreak. I had another match to go see and didn't want to get held up on Court 2.

Thanks for the report. Good to hear from someone who was actually there

It looked like he regained focus again in the tiebreak, but he certainly can't make many mistakes like that against Fish. And his serve better be there for that match.

Rao is virtually seeded at Miami , 32th atm. The fact that Nalbandian is 100 percent out increases his chances. Hopefully he won't lose the seed.

Pretty funny to need a WC to get into the draw, but be seeded.
