Re: 2011: Tour Down Under starts in Chennai
I kinda feel bad for Falla, but guys was there really a mistake with the scoring??
I was watching on and off because of lagging stream...
when the third set got back to 3-2 it had me worry that incident have affect Kei too much, I'm glad he got thru in 3 straight games after that.

Hi chewy,
I don't know if Falla's claim was correct, but maybe the scoreboard in the arena was wrong? Otherwise he wouldn't have been that angry.
But some players can channel that kind of anger into playing better and winning points (like Rafa for example). Mistakes do happen so Falla needs to learn how to bounce back from the disappointment.
And I'm glad Kei already had double breaks by then he had an insurance break even after giving away one break back.
Misty, I hear you. As you say Tipsy never gives up. Kei needs to get into upper gear more quickly.
I think it will be a great match if both players play to their potential.

Re: 2011: Tour Down Under starts in Chennai
Yeah I agree with you bunny, it was one of those rare situations in a tennis match that nobody wants but it's part of this sport and another big mental challenge.
Its a shame Falla couldn't let it go, the whole incident just dug a hole and buried inside his head then he fell apart.
It takes Kei sometime before he settle into the match but he's thru to QF in his first tournament of the year, hope he can keep going!

Re: 2011: Tour Down Under starts in Chennai
Already some reviews of the match.
This one includes details of what happened in the 3rd set:

Umpiring gaffe costs Falla
Colombian Alejandro Falla lost 6-4 3-6 2-6 to Kei Nishikori in the Chennai Open second round, in a match that ended embroiled in controversy.
By Vineeth Krishnan
Drama ensued on Centre Court in the second game of Thursday as the 27-year-old Falla threw the second round game against Kei Nishikori following a dispute with the chair umpire. Having won the first set and been 3-0 up in the second, Falla lost six games on the trot as the Japanese youngster levelled things up.
But the real story of the match unfolded on the Falla serve in the first game of the decider. Having gone up 15-0, a backhand lob by Nishikori fell just wide of the baseline. Even though the line umpire called the ball out, the chair umpire, Mohamad El Jenatti of Morocco, announced the score as 15-all. Falla did not take notice of the error at that point and proceeded with the game.
Nishikori won the third point and appeared to ask the chair umpire what the score was again after hearing the announcement for 15-30. Three points later, Falla was walking off the court after getting what he thought was the game-winning point, when it came to his notice that the score was Deuce. He argued with the official for a while, who maintained that the score on the board was correct.
A disconsolate Falla smashed a ball out of the stadium and was given a warning for abusive behaviour. Two points later, a forehand pass by Nishikori got him a break of serve and with that Falla let loose, repeatedly smashing his racquet on court. His actions got him a penalty and Nishikori started the second game 15-0 up.
Falla returned the Nishikori serve and then walked away, continuing his remonstrations and this charade continued for two games. Down 0-3 and with his coach screaming at him to give his best, Falla gave one last shot at the match.
But by then it was a case of too little too late and even though he broke Nishikori in the fourth game, the set and match was soon wrapped up by the Japanese star.

Re: 2011: Tour Down Under starts in Chennai
More on the match with quotes from the players:

Nishikori reaches Chennai Open quarters
AFP, Jan 6, 2011, 10.09pm IST
CHENNAI: Japan's rising star Kei Nishikori won nine games in a row against Alejandro Falla on his way to the quarterfinals of the $450,000 ATP Chennai Open on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Nishikori, who stunned two-time defending champion Marin Cilic in the first round, lost the first set but fought back to beat the Colombian 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and eight minutes.
Nishikori appeared to be heading out of the tournament when Falla, playing a superb baseline game, took the first set in 44 minutes and worked up a 3-0 lead in the second.
But the Japanese, ranked number 98 to his rival's 105, swung the match around by winning the next nine games, giving him not only the second set but also a 3-0 lead in the decider.
Falla, who grew increasing frustrated in the Chennai heat, managed to win just two more games as Nishikori raced to a thrilling victory.
"I always seem to start slowly and that is something I must change quickly," said Nishikori. "I got lucky today but I don't think that will happen every time.
"It was good I came back well and won the second set. Two wins out of two is a good start for me."
Nishikori next plays sixth-seeded Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia for a place in the semifinals of the season-opening event.
Tipsarevic, a semifinalist in Chennai in 2009, brushed aside Alexandre Kudryavtsev of Russia 6-2, 7-6 (7/3) in an hour and 22 minutes.
"I am feeling good, fit and fresh despite the humidity," world number 49 Tipsarevic said.
"Nishikori is a very good player, but I am ready. It will be a baseline game against him."
Tipsarevic said Serbia's victory in the Davis Cup final against France last month gave him added incentive to do well in the new season.
"My confidence these days has a lot to do with our Davis Cup win," he said. "It was billed as a world championship by my country and to come out it victorious was unbelievable."
Tipsarevic lost the opening singles in the Cup final to Gael Monfils and was dropped for the deciding reverse singles with the tie level at 2-2.
His replacement, Viktor Troicki, beat Michael Llodra in straight sets to clinch his nation's memorable win.
Meanwhile, eighth-seeded Robin Haase of the Netherlands fought back after a shaky start to defeat Japanese qualifier Yuichi Sugita in three sets.
The 60th-ranked Haase lost the first set 4-6, before winning the next two 6-3, 6-4 against the number 180 Sugita.
