Smile Federer's Domination in 2004

After yesterday, there is no doubt he is going to win more Grand Slams in the future, but his season so far has been perfect and wonderful.

9 titles out of 15 tournaments:

Austalian Open
Dubai
Indian Wells
Hamburg
Halle
Wimbledon
Gstaad
Toronto
US Open

3 majors, 3 Master Series, 1 title in Swiss soil, Ranked #1. what else can he do?? He is just amazing. I had tears in my eyes when he won against Hewitt. (btw, Roger "owns" Hewitt. Hewitt is the only player beaten by Rogi in 4times and in 4 different surfaces this year ). I cant believe he has every shot and executes them so easily!!!!

I am sure he will win at least one more title before the end of the year but so far it has been such a successful 2004 for Roger Federer

Congratulations Roger!!!!!

The funny thing is I recall at the start of the year I was reading Roger's official forums and there was a thread "What titles do you want/think Roger will win this year?"

Even the most optimistic fans put down a list far less then what he has already won this year. What a year.

Wow, what an incredible year! Congratulations Roger & fellow Rogi fans

Hope he wins Basel and the Master Cup, that would be a perfect ending to this great season.

Go Roger!

i'd like to see him win Basel in October. back to back Swiss titles in the same year. that would be just awesome!

Basel w be very nice for ROGI... it s be the only thing he focusses on besides Houston.

After last year, who w think he could surpass himself???

Better reduce his sched big time in 2005.

I don't think Rogi played too much this year. He took time off when he needed to. I expect his schedule to be similiar next year.

Daniel...this is the most I had ever seen you written here and so well put!

It really had been a crazy year for Rogi and I somewhat wish he can just take off now, sit down and enjoy what he had achieved! Basel, Cup...he can win them next year, don't have to win them all in the same year

I just hope he finds the chance to really enjoy his achievements for this whole year before a whole new year of challenge begins.

The funny thing is I recall at the end of last year after Houston or after Wimbly? (don't remember clearly) when talking about his catching up with or even breaking Pete's 14 slams record, you listed a fact that by 22, Pete had already won 5 GS titles while Roger just one---I was really stunned, thinking it was just way too many for Roger to catch up at least at the same stage with Pete. And you added that if Roger could get 3 slams the next year, he would have 4, not much behind what Pete had achieved by the same stage I was thinking like...oh no, that was not much possible

But now see what has already happened...totally

So now what do you expect for Roger's run in slams next year, maybe to really catch up with Pete at the same stage?

Thanks Lalitha, you have just made my day

I usually don't like comparing players from different eras in terms of what they achieved, but if you compare Pete and Rogi, they are very close now:

By September 1994, Pete had won 1 Aus, 2 Wimbies, 2 U.S.

Rogi has 1 Aus, 2 Wimbies, 1 U.S. so in effect the only thing seperating them is the 1990 uso Pete won when he was 19.

By that time Pete had collected 5 TMS events: 1 IW, 2 Miami, 1 Rome, 1 Cincy

Rogi has 4: 1 IW, 2 Hamburg, 1 Toronto

They had both won 1 TMC title respectively.

The only other major difference is that Pete finished '93 as #1, and while Rogi was close, he didn't in '03.

So all in all, if Rogi stays healthy and keeps it together I definitely see him with a chance of equalling and perhaps even surpassing Pete's record. However, there is still a looooooong way to go till that happens.

Ok, if Roger wants to be equal with Pete by the end of next year he will need to win 3 slams again, yikes!

At the corresponding stage of their career Pete had one extra slam and he won 2 slams the following year, so Roger will need a grand slam to get ahead of Pete

The good news is that after the age of 24, Pete's grand slam winning pace slowed down to a turtle pace of a slam a year.
