Well I only really look at the ATP site but when I looked at the matchup, the following things struck me:
Daniel:
20 years old.
Ranked 249 - which is career high ranking - so playing his best tennis of career so far in last 12 months.
Won a Futures in Spain in early March, although no a couple of poor results at Challengers since.
2 recent wins over Puerta, recent win over Patience and Lopez Jaen, all ranked in the top 200 - so getting some wins above current rank lately.
Leftie
Burzi:
28 years old now.
Ranked 335, only ever been as high as 269.
Recent results nothing special, lost to Lopez Jaen, Pashanski, Lacko last week in Sarajevo, so not really beating players ranked higher than him too often.
Challenger record pretty medicore, never beaten a leftie at Challenger level.
I've never seen either player so based on this much info, it seemed like Daniel has a career trajectory on an upward path, whereas Burzi is treading water or heading backwards at his age.
So on balance of probability, Daniel seemed the likelier winner.
Normally I tend to back the higher ranked player, as Daniel is, unless there's compelling evidence to go the other way - like an obvious poor run of form by the higher ranked player, or the lower ranked player has had some notable scalps in the last few weeks and therefore might be confident and playing above their ranking. Home soil sometimes swing it a bit, also I tend to check out a player's historical record at a particular event, see if it tends to bring out any special feelings and good results there above what they normally do.
Doesn't always work though. Sometimes the underdog comes out and trashes them for no readily apparent reason according to the stats *shrug*

ok, this was my thinking on most of my other picks and they all worked out except for jun
but i never found all this information on daniel to begin with. when i looked at his atp profile page and his itf profile page it was just blank
it showed all this information for you?

lol nice try.
I was originally committed to Athens but for some reason everyone wanted to play Athens - it ended up I was halfway down the list in the quallies so I withdrew. Both Monza and Baton Rouge still had main draw spaces so I entered Monza.
Evita I will probably enter Johannesburg but I'm waiting a bit to see where everyone goes and I'll enter where there's most likelihood of a main draw spot. I loathe challenger quallies.
I think I'll stick in challengers until Roland Garros quallies and try to qualify there.

I agree with this statement. I think sometimes when people are ready to retire, even if they want to go out the best they can, their hearts are not really in it and we get this kind of result.

I have to work late and won't see anything, most likely not even a scoreboard.

Q. Seemed like you were just trying to make him miss, just taking pace off the ball until he made a mistake. Was that your strategy a lot?
GÄEL MONFILS: Zero strategy. Nothing. My mind was empty.
Q. What do you mean?
GÄEL MONFILS: I mean just pushing the ball back and see what happened.
Q. Really? That's what you were doing?
GÄEL MONFILS: Yeah.
|
The strategy was to make Roger proud apparently.

When I first saw that thread (not long after you posted) I thought it might get deleted because it was essentially a match thread. It managed to provide some entertainment, though.

Miami's timing is just awful for me. Way worse than the AO or Monte Carlo or whatever.
Now off to check out the Mikey-MY .
