Top Seed Ramazzotti Survives Scare; Second Seed Kecmanovic Eases into Eddie Herr Final Rematch with Kypson

Quote:
Top seed Samuele Ramazzotti was in a precarious position in his third round boys 14s match Thursday against Trent Bryde, a No. 17 seed. Serving at 3-4 in the third set, the 14-year-old Italian had seen a 40-0 lead disappear, and he was cramping.

Bryde had blasted two straight forehand return winners off Ramazzotti's second serve, then fired a perfect forehand pass down the line to earn a break point. A blustery crosswind added to the challenge, but Ramazzotti managed to come up with a big shot when he needed it, hitting a backhand overhead winner to save the break point. Bryde, from Suwanee, Georgia, earned another break point, but netted the second serve return he had twice hit for winners earlier in the game. Ramazzotti closed out the game with a difficult overhead, and Bryde's chance was gone. He was broken in the next game, when Ramazzotti hit a backhand drop volley winner that Bryde could only applaud.

Quote:
Ramazzotti served out the final game at love, but admitted after the match that he was struggling physically, and he had an extensive stretching session later.

Top seed Nawakarn stunned by unseeded Ramazzotti

Quote:
UNSEEDED Italian Samuele Ramazzotti knocked out boys’ singles top seed Nawakarn Khunjan of Thailand 6-7, 6-4, 6-1 to move into the semi-finals of the 49th International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit yesterday.

The win pits him against 11th seed Katsuya Ikezoi from Japan in today’s second game on center court.

Second seed Shohei Chikami and 13th seed Yousuke Watanuki, both from Japan, will start the day’s action at the National Tennis Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas at 9am.

Girls’ singles top seed Kwan Yau Ng from Hong Kong was dumped out of the competition on Thursday after suffering a 6-3, 6-0 loss to 15th seed Qi-Li Ma from China.

Eleventh seed Mihika Yadav from India will play 12th seed Yang Lee from Chinese Taipei on court one, while sixth seed Khim Iglupas from the Philippines takes on Qi-Li Ma on court two at 9am.

The girls’ doubles top seeds, Miyo Kobayashi from Japan and Yi-Chi Ma from Chinese Taipei secured their spot in the final after handing a 6-3, 6-1 beating to sixth seeds from Chinese Taipei, Tzu-Hui Chen and Pei Ju Hsieh.

They will be facing fifth seeds Yang Lee and Qi-Li Ma in the third game on centre court.

Kobayashi who partnered Singapore’s Rheeya Doshi to lift the girls’ doubles title of the 48th edition is hoping for a repeat of the results.

“So far the tournament has been alright, I cramped up in the singles so now I will try to be champions in the doubles,” said Kobayashi.

“Lee and Ma are actually my friends and... if we play well we could beat them but it will be a tough match if we don’t,” she said.

Boys’ doubles top seeds Anthony Susanto and Tio Juliandi Hutauruk moved into the final after recording a 6-4, 3-6, 10-3 win over fourth seeds Nawakarn and Vorachon Rakpuangchon of Thailand.

They will be taking on eighth seeds Tin Chen and Chung Han Tsai from Chinese Taipei in the fourth and final match of the day.

Anthony Susanto is expecting a tough encounter today.

“It will be a hard match (today) because the guys from Chinese Taipei play good doubles,” said Susanto.

Ramazzotti continues to impress

Quote:
UNSEEDED Italian Samuele Ramazzotti continued his impressive run at the 49th International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit to book his berth in the final.

He knocked out 11th seed Katsuya Ikezoi from Japan 6-4, 6-4, to set up his championship match against Japan’s Shohei Chikami at 9am today.

Chikami secured his position after a four-hour long 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win against compatriot 13th seed Yousuke Watanuki at the National Tennis Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Ramazzotti’s coach of 10 years, Latini Luca said that reaching the final was tough but not unexpected.

“We were hoping to get to the final but you know only one in a lot of players can do it,” Luca told The Brunei Times.

“To be unseeded is not a good thing because you can meet a good player in the first round but it’s (unavoidable) since he only started playing in the ITF in October because he was born in 1999... so it’s normal that he has to do it step by step.

“It is a good result that can help bring him to the top 500 so next time he will be seeded.

“Chikami will be a tough match because he’s a very good and smart player, so I hope it will be a good final,” added Luca.

Ramazzotti spent a week prior to the tournament in Malaysia taking part in the 7th ITF Malacca International Junior Championship 2014 where he lasted until the third round of the boys’ singles before going on to lift the trophy in the boys’ doubles.

The Italian partnered with Turkey’s Kaya Gore for their 2-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory against fourth seeds Chikami and Watanuki in the final.

Despite taking second place during the boys’ doubles in Malacca, Chikami was the boys’ singles champion, beating Singapore’s Yong Jie Isaac Ong 6-4, 6-1 in the final.

“Coming from Japan where it’s really cold, I’ve had to endure the hot weather here,” said Chikami.

“I’m confident that I can win the final,” he added.

The girls’ singles final will see 12th seed Yang Lee from Chinese Taipei take on 15th seed Qi-Li Ma from China at 9am today.

Lee earned her spot after knocking out 11th seed Mihika Yadav from India 6-2, 6-2 while Ma secured her slot after a marathon 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 win over sixth seed Khim Iglupas from the Philippines.

The Indonesian duo of Anthony Susanto and Tio Juliandi Hutauruk who are ranked first seeds in the boys' doubles were crowned champions after taking out eighth seeds Tin Chen and Chun Han Tsai from Chinese Taipei 6-3, 3-6, 11-9.

The girls' doubles final saw top seeds Miyo Kobayashi from Japan and Yi-Chi Ma from Chinese Taipei outplay fifth seeds Lee and Ma 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 to take top honours.

Unseeded Italian wins tournament

Quote:
UNSEEDED Italian Samuele Ramazzotti shocked second seed Shohei Chikami of Japan 6-4, 6-2 to win the boy’s singles title at the 49th International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit yesterday.

It was Ramazzotti’s second win in as many weeks over the Japanese after he beat him for the 7th ITF Malacca International Junior Championship 2014 boys’ doubles title last week, where he partnered Turkey’s Kaya Gore.

It was also the second shock that the Italian has dished out in Brunei after taking down top seed Nawakarn Khunjan of Thailand 6-7, 6-4, 6-1on Friday to move into Saturday’s semi-finals, where he then beat Japan’s 11th seed Katsuya Ikezoi 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 to book his slot in the final.

Meanwhile in the girl’s singles, 15th seed Qi-Li Ma from China was crowned champion after an easy 6-3, 6-0 thrashing over 12th seed Yang Lee from Chinese Taipei.

Chikami started off the boys’ final looking to be the stronger of the two and took a 4-0 lead before Ramazzotti finally heated up.

Ramazzotti’s response, though, saw him take six straight games to clinch the first set.

His domination continued into the second set, where he only allowing Chikami to take two games to trail 2-3 before sealing the final three.

Speaking to The Brunei Times after the game, Ramazzotti said his plan before heading to the ITF Junior Circuit in Asia was try to win something so he would break into the top-500.

“I was very satisfied with my first win in the ITF singles,” Ramazzotti said after the win at the National Tennis Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Competing in Malacca last week, Ramazzotti and his Turkish partner defeated fourth seeds Chikami and compatriot Yousuke Watanuki.

Ramazzotti’s coach of 10 years, Latini Luca said he didn’t expect his student to win the first set when he was behind 4-0.

“Samuele thought it would be really hard to win the first set but I just told him to fight point by point and see what happens,” said Luca.

“I didn’t believe he would be able to recover because it was too far, so it was really a great recovery.

“When he was down I also told him to think about taking it to the third set.

“Now we will head back to Italy and prepare (for) the red clay season in Europe, with the first being in the next four or five weeks,” added Luca.

Chikami, who won the boys’ singles in Malacca, felt that he played his best but his opponent was once again too good for him.

The boy’s doubles final saw top seeds Anthony Susanto and Tio Juliandi Hutauruk from Indonesia edge eighth seeds Tin Chen and Chun Han Tsai from Chinese Taipei 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 on Saturday.

The day also saw top seeds Miyo Kobayashi from Japan and Yi-Chi Ma from Chinese Taipei outplay fifth seeds Lee and Qi-Li Ma 3-6, 6-3, 11-9 for the girl’s doubles title.
