Yevgeny is so quiet lately. No interviews in neither Russian media nor international. Very low profile at Australian Open. Quietly moving to the second round. And he is one of only two players who had won this Slam.. Could be a good sign.. He should be able to beat Nieminen. But then it would be his nemesis Canas. If he can get thru Canas, I think he can go all the way. Agassi, as good as he is playing, I think, is no longer capable of physical best-of-five battle.

he lost
I saw parts of this match. Zhenya played well in the third and fourth sets (he got very lucky at the end of it) but not stable like in one game he could make a double fault, then an ace, a fantastic winner and then three unforced errors. Jarkko was serving well too. I didn't see the fifth set but I guess he was worn out physically
I didn't expect him to do very well at the AO but still if he had won that match he would have got more confidence and had some match practice and maybe would have surprised everyone by getting very far

he did play well in sets 3/4 which were on Eurosport
then he in final set, his serve started to desert him and he was just missing the lines
sets 3/4 was the best i seen him play for some time.
just i thought he would make it after he won 4th

Well done, Zhenya.. Unfortunately, the way he plays on indoor carpet is not really indicative of his true form. I remember when he came back from 1998 injury he reached the finals at Marseille in the first very tournament. But after that he struggled till US hardcourts.

Quite true. In addition, the match was played at a relatively slow tempo so Zhenia had quite a lot of time to set up his shots and construct the points. Not to mention, that Pless did virtually nothing on returning Zhenia's serves.
