Smile Re: The Invitational Event Thread

Nice finds.

I remember that I came across some Adelaide Rio results:

The 1988 draw is on Wiki (4-man at that time): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_exhibitions_in_1988

In 1989 there has been a McEnroe-Wilander encounter but I don't know more about it.
Doubles Final: McEnroe/Woodforde def. Lendl/Wilander 7/6 6/2 (no idea about the exact date)

1990 (Jan. 11-14) Final: McEnroe def. Edberg 4/6 7/6 6/4

And I've just found out an interesting event at Wirral, 1988 & 1989. It was an event that hadn't been held since 1972. In 1989, McEnroe was beaten at the 2nd round by Jim Pughs. Becker won it on June 24 beating Peter Lundgren in the final 7/5 6/4. At the same time, Lendl played an exhibition in Wentworth where he was beaten by Jonas Svensson.
http://articles.latimes.com/1989-06-...arm-up-tournam

In 1988, McEnroe made it to the semi-finals and lost to Van Rensburg. David Pate and Leif Shiras were the other two semi-finalists. Chesnokov lost in the quarters to Van Rensburg. Andres Gomez and Johan Kriek also played.

Oh yeah, that's a very famous one. The Rosemont Lite Challenge of Champions. One of the richest exos. I think it has no cause to be jealous of Antwerp (though I cannot really say, wasn't born ). I gave the wiki link in the OP. I think the final of the 1982 edition was famous and controversial because that's the one in which Connors crossed over the net all the way to Mac's baseline and set a dispute (pointing the finger at him).

It's interesting because I had the info that Borg was down 0-3 against Connors in 1983. So that makes it 1-3 (and perhaps other encounters are still missing).

Great find !

I have a few results from Stowe (July 22-27 1987):

Quote:
1R: ?

QF:
Lendl def. Wilkison 4/6 7/6 6/2
Krickstein def. Scanlon 4/6 6/1 6/4
Arias def. Gilbert 6/2 6/1
Witsken def. ?

SF:
Lendl def. Krickstein 7/6 4/6 6/2
Arias def. Witsken 6/2 4/6 7/6

F:
Lendl def. Arias 6/3 6/3
Tim Wilkison had 5 mp's against Lendl (source: nytimes.com). The QF's were on the 24th while the tournament started on the 22nd, so I guess their should have been a 1st round.

In 1986 there was a first round doubles match between the Gullikson's and Connors/Glickstein won by the Gullikson's 6-3, 6-7(1), 7-6 (8) on Aug. 15 [orlandosentinel.com]

In 1985, Connors defeated Gene Mayer in the Final: 2–6 6–3 6–4 (Jul. 30-Aug. 4)

The tournament was a GP event between 1978 & 1983

Arias def. Witsken 6/2 4/6 7/6(4)

1R:
Scanlon d. Berger 7-6, 6-7, 7-6(6) - 3 hours 52 minutes!!
Arias d. Van Rensburg 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 - 4 m.p.
Witsken d. Canter 6-3, 6-2
Wilkison d. Tom Gullikson ?

I'm not sure but maybe that's all. 4 matches in the 1st round then 4 quarterfinals were 4 top-seeded players awaited... Anyway Lendl against Wilkison played his first match in the tournament.

Awesome scorelines in Stowe (Scanlon/Berger). Won't edit, that way your post still makes sense.

The four players missing in Jericho 1987 are Forget, Mansdorf, Wilkison and Vilas - if I'm not mistaken - but I don't know who each of them lost to.

Have another anecdote about Jericho. In 1985, Lendl and Connors reached the final. Play was suspended because of rain on August 25. The USO started the next day. Lendl won it. And both players agreed to resume play in Jericho on Oct. 10 (or 11?). Lendl also won.

^ I've improved my previous post, still couldn't find the other scorelines.
