Default The Invitational Event Thread

I'm very interested in all those invitational tournaments that were held before the ATP Tour Era (1990) and that are usually not sanctioned by the ATP. Those tournaments that interest me the most are those for which 4 match wins are needed in order to get the title. SO 16-man draws or 8-man ones in a RR+SF+F format.

The Antwerp ECC tournament has already been talked about on this forum. So I won't come back to it: http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=158526

So here's a list I have compiled and would like to check it out with you. If you know other than these, I'm always open.

Fréjus Carré d'As 1980-1981 (any other editions?):
1980 Final : Connors def. Tanner 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 [Aug. 4-10]
1981 Final : McEnroe def. Tulasne 6-2, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 [Aug. 3-9]

Dubaď Golden Tennis Tournament 1980 [Nov. 24-30]:
Final: Fibak def. Nastase 3-6 7-6 6-4 *

Melbourne Mazda Challenge 1980-1982 (any other editions?):

1980 Final : Connors def. G. Mayer 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, 7-5 [Oct. 8-12]
1981 Final : G. Mayer def. Teltscher 7-5 6-1 7-6 [Oct. 7-12]
1982 Final : Lendl def. Gerulaitis 6-2 6-2 7-5 [Oct. 19-24]

Challenge of Champions 1981-89:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Challenge_of_Champions

Toronto Molson Light Challenge 1981-1982(any other editions?):

1981 Final : Gerulaitis def. McEnroe 6-4 4-6 6-3 6-3 [Feb. 3-8]
1982 Final : Lendl def. McEnroe 7-5 3-6 7-6 7-5 [Feb. 4-7]
1983 Final : Connors def. Higueras 6-2 6-0 5-7 6-0 [Feb. 8-13]
1984 Final : Lendl def. Noah 6-0 6-2 6-4 [Jan. 30-Feb. 5]

Salisbury WCT Invitational 1981 [Mar. 2-8]
** :

Final : Scanlon def. Amritraj 3-6 6-2 6-4 3-6 6-4

Jericho Hamlet Challenge Cup 1983-1989
***

North Miami Beach 1981-1983
:

1982 Final : Connors def. Teacher 6-2 6-2 [Dec 15-19]
1983 Final : Connors def. Lendl 6-3 7-6 6-1 [Dec 14-20]

Stuttgart Classic 1988
: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1988_St...%E2%80%93_Draw

Forest Hills: WCT Tournament of Champions 1990
:

Final : Lendl def. Krickstein 6-4 6-7 6-3 [Aug. 20-26]****

*This tournament had the highest prize money ever at that time. Wojtek Fibak earned 125000$. The 16 players were: Fibak, Nastase, Tanner, Dupre, Lutz, G. Mayer, Tim Gullikson, Amaya, Sadri, Smith, Dibbs, Vilas, Higueras, Ramirez, Noah & Orantes.
http://hemeroteca.elmundodeportivo.e...z,espa%C3%B1ol

** The 1980 edition won by Borg is listed on the ATP website but not the 1981, if I'm not mistaken.

***became an ATP Tour event in 1990 in Long Island and then New Haven. Was a four-man invitational in 1981 and 8-man in 1982 if I'm not mistaken : http://www.nytimes.com/1987/08/23/ny...some-aces.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilot_Pen_Tennis

**** The Tournament of Champions is listed on the ATP Website until 1989. In early 1990 Lamar Hunt announced the end of the WCT Circuit. The 1990 edition of the ToC would be the last WCT event.

Default Re: The Invitational Event Thread

Today I've accidentally found scorelines of an invitational event for 4 players in Tokyo 1983 ($250,000).

SF:
Borg def. J.McEnroe 6-4 2-6 6-2
Connors def. Kriek 1-6 6-3 7-5

F:
Connors def. Borg 6-3 6-4

It supposed to be Borg's farewell tournament.

SF:
Connors def. Wilander 7-5 6-4
Mayotte def. Lendl 6-4 6-2

F:
Connors def. Mayotte 6-3 6-4 6-2

I don't know quarterfinals but I know that Mayotte beat there Noah.

The Tokyo event is the Suntory Cup, isn't it? I think it was a high regarded exhibition (there are clips on YT). But a 4-man field is rather small.

I'm also sure there have been QF in Newport but don't know more.

Great.

Are you sure the Martin/Wilander match was in the 1st round because I don't have any evidence Martin played another match before encountering Leconte.
http://www.nytimes.com/1990/08/25/sp...s-gilbert.html

I'm still wondering why this tournament seems to be ignored by everyone. Atptennis.com has listed all the previous editions of the ToC. OK I know, 1990 was the year in which the ATP gained control over most open tournaments but yet in the ATP Tour era, they have listed the Grand Slam Cup which was invitational (0 ranking points), so why not listing ToC '90?

Incidentally, Lendl won another edition of the Toronto Molson Light Challenge in 1984, defeating Noah in the final: 6-0 6-2 6-4. I suppose it's the same format as in 1981 but need confirmation. What happened in 1983?

I'm not sure but:

"Todd Martin of Northwestern upset 1988 U.S. Open champion Mats Wilander 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the opening round of the WCT Tournament of Champions Tuesday night at New York."

Thanks Leo.

I've edited the OP because I made a stupid mistake that only I could have made. Peter McNamara did not reach the final of the Melbourne Mazda exo in 1981 because he was defeated by Gene Mayer in the semi (and I had the info !!). Now I've learnt that he went on to beat Teltscher in the final, too. (source: straitstimes.com)

Mayer and Teltscher seem to have been specialists of that event because they were the two players beaten in the semi in 1982, Mayer by Gerulaitis (he had a back injury that day) and Teltscher by Lendl.

I think would be good if you added precise dates of tournaments in the OP.
