I dunno, Vinci always seems to play good but lose. Fognini to win one for Italy, 4-1 Sweden.

I am unsure if Fog will play. Normally Starace and Bolelli will play the singles this season and the doubles together too. Hopefully Poto can beat Vinci on day 1 (possible as Poto beat Haase in Holland) and that would tie up the game at least and make the doubles very important. I would settle for that.

Shouldn't Fognini winning over Starace in challenger final last week and taking Verdasco to five sets in USO help his case enough for a rubber? Or is it something else behind it?

Sweden will likely win 3-2 or 4-1. If Simone/Daniele can pull of the upset, then I think Italy will win the tie. It's going to come down to the doubles IMO.

If Vinci beats Starace in the 1st singles match, the tie is over and they don´t have to play the other 4 matches I see. And it isn´t impossible, Starace sucks on HC, he won just 4 matche this year, 2 out of them against clay courter Gil, then a "retired" win over Ginemo and a win over Haase in DC. And it´s also at Sweden so it will be very difficult for Italy. They have to win doubles and Fognini + Starace have to beat Vinci otherwise it´s over.

I see no reason why the two Italian players will not beat Vinciguerra. Vinci is basically off and on with playing and hasn't been a top performer for years. Although none of the Italians are great on hard court, they are all (the 3 potential singles options) better than Vinci at this point and should win. So to me it comes down to the doubles, where Italy is the major underdog. It will be an upset but Italy can do it, hopefully they make it happen.

I agree with your reasoning on Vinciguerra, and while an upset isn't out of the question, I do think it is improbable.

Yes, the court is poison for the Italians, but you have to ask how much does it really favour Vinciguerra? He has barely played this year...doesn't have the match fitness and confidence an average touring pro has, and surely his physical fitness is a little suspect for a distance match?

Soderling surely won't lose either singles matches, so the Swedes would only need one more point. They have two decent doubles specialists for Saturday...certainly on paper they easily outclass the Italian pairing. The only concern is that Bolelli and Bracciali could be tough to break if they serve well, and if the tie is nicely poised at 1-1 after Friday, a few moments of Swedish panic (Aspelin...) / Italian inspiration could swing the tie a little in Italy's favour.

What was Vinciguerra doing since his performance in Bastad? I'm asking because he was not injured and has not played in any tournament.

From the Swedish TA's webpage:

Quote:
-I've played 5-6 singles and as many doubles in the German- and Austrian league where the level of the opponents is good. The best Austrian players are playing there and a lot of good Germans, says Andreas Vinciguerra.
