Nalby lead 5-1, served for the set twice, wasted some set points and then the most bizzare scenes in the TB, where Gaudio served in the deuce side TWICE IN A ROW. Umpire didn't notice it, players didn't notice it...until the point was over and something didn't felt right of course.
Nalby got a bit frustrated, who could of blame him. He just lost the tiebreak, went two sets down...and not won a game anymore.

He would play Coria in the final, who had a Nadal-like season that year. I still think he would have a chance, the final was played in sunny, dry weather and really fast conditions. Nalby would fancy it for sure.

EDIT: in fact, I think Gaudio served in the deuce side on the first point (should of served to AD side) and then he had to do it again on the second point. Never seen anything like it before.
Cause it wasn't his biggest chance that's why. 2003 US Open is the right answer.

No, he lost to Roddick because he was robbed by biased linesman and an unruley croud who shouted out during the curcial match point.

I have no doubt in my mind, hawk eye at 2003 US Open = David winning his first slam, Roddick slamless till even this date. Though maybe he would have been hungrier at 2009 Wimbledon but I doubt it. Once a choker always a choker.

RG 2006 : what a pity to see him retiring in semi because of an injury. If not he would have trashed goat cheese then Armanifatbutt in final, he played great in 2006, it was his best year (N°3 on ATP ranking). He missed a good opportunity but abdominal problem stopped him from winning

Of course it is, you can't get much closer than that (except having MP in the final )
I just think that RG 2004 deserves a mention, he had a better chance here than in many poll options.

Wimbledon 2002 is a shame. I remember I expected a tight match, with two outstanding baseliners on grass. And we got a 6–1 6–3 6–2 demolition job.
I still can't believe this embarassing result.

It was Nalbandian's first tournament on grass he was far from ready to win then and as 2003 said Nalbandian won that 2nd set it would be 1 set all. Gaudio was playing high quality tennis for 6 matches before the final, so far from clear hence it doesn't deserve a mention.

Two sets to love and a break in the 5th against Baghdatis has more credence than RG.

Has anyone mentioned 2005 AO?

Had he beaten Hewitt there things could have opened up for him.

I think RG 2004 does deserve a mention because even though Gaudio was playing great tennis, Nalbandian was up 5-1 in the 2nd set and held setpoints. Somehow he managed to lose the set and then he practically gave up in the 3rd, but would he have won that 2nd set then the match could have gone either way because both were playing well in the first 2 sets. I am not saying Nalbandian would have won against Coria in the final (Coria beat Nalbandian at Monte Carlo a couple of weeks before), but I think RG 2004 does deserve a mention at least.

AO 2004 belongs perhaps in that list too, because Nalbandian was playing extremely well in that tournament just like Federer. He was the toughest opponent for Fed that tournament and they played 4 tight sets with Nalbandian failing to make more out of it in the 1st and 2nd set. That match was practically was the final of that AO.
