To be fair, only about 25% of what I said was ass-kissing. The Maria-Doris comment was true, if a little bit OTT and cheesy

I like you cheesy.
You guys, you can really vote for Doris, she contributes so much more, unlike I with my my so I'll gladly lose to her. I am surprised I've got so many votes against her.
you're crazy I've never been to a gas station which doesn't have "brightly coloured chocolates, magazines and other stuff in the shop". What are gas stations in Latvia like? Can you take a picture next time you're at one?
I'm afraid I don't have a time machine You see, that was 15 years ago. I don't think there were any shops at all in gas stations at that time in Latvia. Not even a toilet. But perhaps it was not necessary because few people had cars anyway
Everything has been "westernized" since then, including also gas stations. You'd be right at home there I actually have a Statoil right across the street, and I go there for food once in a while. It's terribly expensive though.

So are they now about even with the German gas stations that made you back in the day?
Yes, that was my point. It's a natural part of the Western culture - sell anything anywhere if there is someone to buy it. We didn't have that during the Soviet times, there was no market economy. This buying culture didn't exist. Now we've adopted this culture, you'd be amazed at how much can change during 15 years Now I don't have to go to Germany to look at a pretty gas station

Do you know if when there is a quick switch to a market economy- is there a high incidence of people going into debt? Also- dumb question alert- during Soviet times were there credit cards avaialable and if so- were they some of the ones you see world wide or were they specific to the area/Eastern bloc countries?
